Work Location Remote for ASCOBANS meetings and the Animal Culture Workshop On-site for meetings in Bonn and Samarkand

Expected duration Two or more contracts for different periods of time.

Duties and Responsibilities The Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS) is seeking two or more report writers to serve at the following meetings:

1. ASCOBANS Expert workshop to recommend small cetacean conservation objectives in relation to anthropogenic removals: - Part 1: 29-30 March 2023 (dates tbc), online (live or from recording, 6.5 days) - Part 2: 16-17 May 2023 (dates tbc), in Bonn (live or from recording - tbc, 6.5 days) 2. 2nd CMS Workshop on Conservation Implications of Animal Culture and Social Complexity - Part II: 3-4 April 2023, in Parma, Italy (from recording, 6.5 days) 3. 6th Meeting of the Sessional Committee of the Scientific Council (ScC-SC6): 18 – 21 July 2023 in Bonn, Germany (6.5 days) 4. 4th Meeting of the ASCOBANS Common Dolphin Group, 25 September 2023, in Copenhagen (tbc) (from recording, 3.5 days) 5. 28th Meeting of the ASCOBANS Advisory Committee, 26-28 September 2023, in Copenhagen (tbc) (from recording, 9.5 days) 6. 54th Meeting of the Standing Committee, 22 October 2023, 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP14), 23 – 28 October 2023 and 55th Meeting of the Standing Committee (StC55), 28 October 2023 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan (2 positions, 17.5 and 12.5 days respectively)

The report writers are needed to write accurate summaries of these meetings. These reports shall be produced as soon as possible after the meetings but in any case, within one month after the closure of ScC-SC6, StC54, COP14 and StC55 and provided to the Secretariat for comment. Based on the comments received, these reports should be amended and submitted to the Secretariat for final approval.

Specific tasks:

1) Service the meetings with the purpose of taking notes of the debates and decisions taken. The Secretariat will provide the Report Writers with copies of all the relevant documents, including copies of set speeches (opening remarks etc.) in advance, where they are available.

2) Contribute to producing a first draft of the report of the meeting using notes and if necessary, audio recording from the meeting provided by the Secretariat. The reports are expected to reflect the main elements of the discussions under each item of the agenda, and include decisions taken. General reference as regards the format of the reports and the level of detail required will be the reports of preceding relevant meetings. The reports may need to include annexes, such as documents produced by working groups established during the meetings. The report so prepared will be submitted to the Secretariat for review/comments as soon as possible after each meeting (but in any case, within one month). A second draft of the reports based on comments on the first draft, which the Report Writers will receive from the Secretariat, will be produced and submitted to the Secretariat for final approval.

Qualifications/special skills Postgraduate degree/ diploma is required Five years of experience in report writing in international environmental meetings is required. Experience in CMS Family meetings is desirable.

Languages Fluency in English is required
