Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Centralized Management Unit (CMU) of the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) in Turin, Italy. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Chief, CMU, and will coordinate closely, on a daily basis, with the other Information Technology Assistant.

Responsibilities Within assigned authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Carry on the improvement, expansion and maintenance of the data processing infrastructure of UNICRI, including the services for the personnel and the public (including Firewall, Routing, Network, Virtual Private Networking, Switchboard and Telephones, Mail, Fileservers, Events Monitoring, Backup, Data Storage, Hypertext Servers including Webservers, Desktop or Application Servers for Computer Terminals, Groupware, Server Virtualization, and any other relevant service and equipment for electronically aided systems) for all the UNICRI offices. Create specific detailed documentation (summary, specification, technical description) of the impacted services.
  • Participate in the design of UNICRI web pages; update, correct and improve the websites as instructed and when necessary.
  • Provide maintenance of the existing on-line learning and training platforms of UNICRI projects; assist UNICRI staff with their customization, setting up and troubleshooting prior to/during trainings, when needed. Create specific detailed documentation (summary, specification, technical description) of the impacted services;
  • Provide technical support in identification of online platform/software for data collection and data management (data storage and back up; data security management; data entry and coding processes; detection of data entry or processing errors, etc.). provide relevant training for UNICRI staff, when needed.
  • Provide advice and training to UNICRI end-users with respect of running/operating the on-line training platforms, when needed.
  • Perform other workjob-related duties, as required.

Education High school diploma or equivalent is required. Specialized training in web design portals (CMS) will be an advantage.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of relevant working experience in information technology, particularly in maintenance of data processing infrastructure, including soft- and hardware, is required. Experience in Windows Server administration is required. Experience in web-page design and maintenance, particularly experience in software development (PHP, HTML/CSS and Javascript language) and system administration (Ubuntu Linux and MySQL database) is required. Experience in Drupal and WordPress development, including themes and custom modules design, maintenance and management is desirable. Experience with software for data collection is desirable. Experience with software for the creation and management of online training platforms is desirable. Experience in use of Git repository technology is also desirable. Experience in an international organization’s or within the United Nations system’s IT infrastructure and related administrative and technical process is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Italian (host-country language) is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a technical test and a competency-based interview.

Special Notice This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country. Non-local candidates will be considered only when no suitable candidate from the duty station is identified and will be subject to local recruitment. A staff member subject to local recruitment shall not be eligible for the allowances or benefits exclusively applicable to international recruitment.

This position is funded from extra budgetary resources. The initial appointment will be for a period of one year and any extension of appointment will be subject to the availability of the post or funds, budgetary approval or extension of the mandate. The appointment will be limited to service with UNICRI.

Other Skills and Requirements Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the GGST at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting an application.

The GGST is a proctored entry-level examination at the duty station. Any travel expenses incurred in order to take the examination are the responsibility of the candidate and will not be reimbursed by the Organization.

Having passed the Administrative Support Assessment Test [in English] at the United Nations headquarters, Economic Commission for Africa, Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, United Nations Office at Geneva, United Nations Office at Vienna, International criminal tribunal for Rwanda or International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia may be accepted in lieu of the GGST
