Result of Service First and second phases of new UNICRI Archive: 1. Search for relevant documents related to the establishment of UNICRI, the composition and work of its Board of Trustees, reports, decisions, Host country legislation and relevant UN documents, as well as preparing a short report on the retrieved materials and advice on relevant classification/archiving method/s. 2. Oral histories to complement and fill in any gaps in historical records, where necessary.

Work Location The candidate shall be located either in Rome or in Turin (travels to the other offices shall be authorized when needed)

Duties and Responsibilities Background of the assignment:

United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI's goals are:

  • to advance understanding of crime-related problems;
  • to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems;
  • to support the respect of international instruments and other standards;
  • to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

Specific tasks to be performed by the consultant: Under the supervision of the Programme Officer (Special Assistant), and in coordination with the Rome Liaison Officer, the Consultant shall perform the following duties:

  • Review physical and online sources to identify, select and collect materials relating to key UNICRI historical events, statutory documents, and governance documents, including all formal documents of the UNICRI Board of Trustees, as well as significant reports, decisions, and assessments relating to its statute, institutional status, and development; such review shall be done among historical documents of UNICRI stored in premises in Rome and Turin.

  • Identify gaps in the documentation and search for, request, and obtain relevant materials from public and private libraries, official United Nations online sources, etc., with primary focus on UN online libraries.

  • Perform an initial organization of physical and online materials for the UNICRI archives.

  • Identify individuals who are acquainted with UNICRI history and/or who have served in the organization for many years or in key roles and carry out interviews to obtain an oral history of relevant events to complement physical archival documentation. Prepare a summary of each oral history and coordinate approval with the person interviewed.

  • Prepare a report on the archival materials identified and collected and provide concrete advice and recommendations to create an adequate and sustainable cataloguing and/or classification system for the above-mentioned archive/historical materials, both physical and online, as relevant, discuss the same with UNICRI management, and address any comments. These recommendations will inform phase three of the project in the future.

    Qualifications/special skills Advanced University degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Communication, Public Information, Library & Information Science or other similar fields is required. A Bachelor’s degree in the same field in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of a Master’s degree. A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in library work, archives management, information network management, or another similar field is required. Experience with public international organizations, such as United Nations, etc., is desirable.

    Languages Fluency in oral and written English is required. Good working knowledge of Italian (host country language) and/or French is desirable.
