What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose

A new digitization strategy of the ICRC Archives and Library has been adopted to enhance access to all public material. It lays out 3 main ambitions: - Prospect external funding for the digitization of the main public archives and collections - Explore new AI technologies to facilitate recognition and automated indexation of ICRC archives and library collections through pilot projects. - Create a single online entry point to search, consult and retrieve public archives and library collections to ease end-user’s experience.

The role of the post holder will be to assist the Head of digitization projects in implementing the three streams of the digitization programme.

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

The post holder will assist the Head of digitization programme in the following domains: • Fundraising • Digitization • Project management • Archives management • New information technologies • Communication

The post holder will assist the Head of digitization programme in the following specific projects:

• Elaborating specific digitization projects for fundraising/partnership • Pilot projects on testing the potential of Handwritten text recognition technologies applied to the Second World War prisoners of war archives • Harmonization of archives and library collections description practices to prepare for a future single online access platform to all archives and collections.

The post holder’s main responsibilities related to the above-mentioned projects are the following:

• Contribute to the organization and follow up of internal/external meetings and workshops • Draft reports, messages and minutes of meetings • Contribute to presentations • Coordinate and administrate communications actions • Community management

Certifications / Education required

Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field (Information sciences, Project management, management, Communication, fundraising)

OR

A degree in a different field (ie. History, International Affairs/relations, International Law, etc.) combined with a demonstrated interest/experience in one or more of the following areas: Information Sciences, Project Management, Communication, New information technologies

Professional Experience required

A maximum of one year of professional experience (or two years if supplemented by traineeships).

Desired profile and skills

• Excellent written and spoken English and French • Excellent organization skills, ability to take initiatives and work autonomously • Ability to quickly understand complex organisational issues • Flexibility and ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines • Ability to produce powerful documents and presentations and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing • Strong computer literacy, familiarity with updating websites/intranet sites, Windows, Lotus Notes, SharePoint and various software programs (Excel, Power Point). • A demonstrated interest/experience in project management in the field of digital humanities, archives or libraries. • Understanding of the mandate and modus operandi of the ICRC
