In May and June 2019, the first Mapping Nature for People and Planet workshop was hosted in Kazakhstan, and and co-hosted by UNDP Nature for Development, UNDP CO Kazakhstan, and the Committee of Forest and Wildlife. The purpose of this workshop was to determine what ecosystems are absolutely essential for biodiversity conservation, climate, and sustainable development, and how those ecosystems should be protected, managed and restored, in order to safeguard essential ecosystem services. It was also an occasion to create a bridge between decision-makers and the science team to launch the project. Following the outcomes of this inception workshop, we are now organizing a second workshop, more technical, on spatial data and tools available to create a map of "Essential Life Support Areas". The Online Volunteers will be helping with the preparation of the workshop, and mostly work on translating the documents from English to Russian.
