Expected duration This is a call for applications for the Interpreters/Translators roster for the Office of the Resident Coordinator in Moldova. Selected candidates will be contacted in function of RC Office needs and offered a new contract for each assignment or for a certain period of time when the services will be required (1 month - maximum 6 months). The incumbent will be expected to work on a short notice, depending on operation needs. Final payment amount will be based on actual performance (deliverables completed for each assignment).

Duties and Responsibilities The UN Secretary-General launched on 1 January 2019 a bold and new global reform which re-positioned the UN Development System to deliver more effectively and efficiently with the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. As part of this reform, UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO), under the leadership of an empowered and independent UN Resident Coordinator - the highest-ranking official of the UN Development System and Representative of the UN Secretary-General at country level - support countries in the achievement of their development priorities and the attainment of the SDGs. The Resident Coordinator Office supports the Resident Coordinator and the UNCT in developing, implementing, monitoring and reporting on the UN Cooperation Framework and in all joint activities related to Agenda 2030 in the Republic of Moldova. The UN Resident Coordinator's Office has five core functions:

  • Strategic Planning
  • Economics
  • Partnerships and development finance
  • Data and results management and reporting
  • Communications and advocacy

To ensure smooth communication with government and international partners, RCO will need the services of professional translators/interpreters during a variety of online or in-person meetings, conferences, or other events.

The individual contractor will be responsible for the following:

  • Provide quality consecutive/simultaneous interpretation during meetings/conferences or other events into and from these languages: English, Romanian, Russian;
  • Provide quality translation of documents;
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills;
  • Good knowledge of cultural and sensitive aspects of the country;
  • Ensure information confidentiality.

    Qualifications/special skills Skills: Knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications. Academic Qualifications: University degree in Foreign (English) languages obtained at recognized institution or other qualification obtained upon attending formal language training courses. Experience: Relevant practical experience (at least 5 years) as a translator/interpreter of English, Romanian, Russian languages. Language: Excellent knowledge of English, Romanian, Russian is required.

    Additional Information As per UN policy, Consultants and Individual Contractors may not apply for or be appointed to any position in the Professional or above categories and for positions at the FS-6 and FS-7 levels in the Field Service category within six months of the end of their current or most recent service. This restriction does not apply to associate experts (Junior Professional Officers) appointed under the Staff Rules.
