Under the broader framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in close coordination with other UN agencies, UNDP is supporting Afghan people’s aspiration for peace, prosperity, and sustainability. UNDP is currently implementing its flagship crisis response programme, ABADEI (Area Based Approach to Development Emergency Initiatives), as part of the ongoing UN-led response to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe and the breakdown of Afghanistan’s economy following the August 2021 shift in power.

The Communications Unit leads communication for the office’s development, thematic issues and strategic priorities. The incumbent must be able to work efficiently alone or as part of a dynamic team, developing and implementing creative communication strategies and plans that increase the exposure of UNDP and mobilize public, political, and financial support.

The unit also leads coordinating and supporting regional and country communication teams to ensure the delivery of coordinated, impactful messages and news packages to key audiences considering global and operational strategies and policies. Finally, the unit will provide expert communications advice to senior staff of the organization and other units, streamlining UNDP’s messaging within the office and as part of the larger UNDP family.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Partnership and External Relations Specialist or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Graphic designer will:

• Support design and implementation of the CO communication strategy based on the corporate communications strategy. • Increase visibility of UNDP's mandate and goals through public website and social media use • Present new ideas to represent UNDP data in design and infographics • Design, layout and format publications, and other printed and web-based communications materials considering UNDP’s branding manual, and branding requirements of other donors/partners, as needed. • Design and create illustration, artwork, maps, tables, charts and other graphic elements for communication and promotional materials • Determine size and arrangement of illustrative material and copy, and select style and size or type. • Develop infographics using supplied data to present core development messages and organize complex information into visual representations. • Train and advise other communication staff with the designing and adobe software package • Where necessary, locate photos from UNDP’s photo library sources and ensure proper photo credit is given • Incorporate comments and changes from UNDP staff. • Ensure that the final output(s) for each communication product will be the final web-ready and/or print-ready version • Deliver creative graphic and technical solutions (including infographics if required) for print, electronic, web-based and animated presentations. • Develop conceptual graphics and charts that creatively convey messages/data in the report. • Support UNDP presentations with creative graphics and representation of data. • Liaise with projects in UNDP country office to ensure cooperative approach to communications designing outreach materials. • If required, help produce high quality photography, videography and other digital media products for CO and projects • Liaise with printers, if necessary, by support CO and project in dealing with printing specs and the printing presses. • Any other tasks as required to support communications unit.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers Programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day). • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country. • Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc. • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers. • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Graphic design, layout, or other relevant programmes; experience with visual design, photoshop and video editing is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization.

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials.
