Org. Setting and Reporting The post is located within the Executive Office of the Secretary-General at the Headquarters of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) located in Kingston, Jamaica, and reports directly to the Communications Specialist.

Responsibilities (A)PUBLICATIONS: a. Liaise with relevant ISA staff to identify upcoming publications and create a yearly publication pipeline; b. Develop and implement a publications strategy and plan based on agreed priorities and deadlines to ensure timely delivery of high-quality publications; c. Manage and coordinate the publication production workflow, from copy-editing of manuscript to printing and distribution of print and electronic files; d. Draft, edit and proofread ISA publications, reports, proceedings, and papers as required for internal and external distribution (products include brochures, annual compendiums of selected decisions, workshop proceedings, Technical Studies, etc.); e. Identify content that can be turned into high-impact infographics, data visualizations or other visuals; f. Conduct photo research and ensure adequate credits are provided; g. Liaise with external graphic designers, coordinate layout and design of publications in accordance with ISA Visual Guidelines; h. Review and clear pre-press layout, design, content and cover art for external print production; i. Liaise with external publishers and printers; j .Liaise with distributors, including Amazon for distribution through ISA sales channels; k .Assist in the preparation of briefing materials and presentations for management and staff for conferences, seminars and workshops.

Introduce the elements of a document management system, coordinate and provide general guidance on document management planning by: a. Managing document life cycles, recommending the adoption of new techniques in information distribution, and innovating in work methods and techniques, making the best potential use of the local market for content management and dissemination; b. Analyzing document usage and preparing guidelines on various kinds of documents and materials issued by the Authority; c. Determining the stages in the life cycles of documents in order to identify potential areas for efficiency gains and technical improvements; d. Planning information management policies and preparing/compiling drafting recommendations that can help the Authority to comply with the highest quality standards in information creation, processing, dissemination, retention and storage; e. Identifying potential areas of improvement in information distribution and storage.

(B)EDITING a. Produce, as required, short editorial guidelines based on the UN Editorial Manual and other relevant resources to ensure consistent writing style across the organization; b. Edit all publications and reports of the Authority, including workshop proceedings, special publications, selected decisions of meetings, conference papers, working papers and any other documentation as required; c. Rewrite and restructure texts for greater readability and better logical sequence where required; d. Consult with experts within the Secretariat to clarify any ambiguities and rectify substantive errors in all publications; e. Check the language version to be edited against the language of the original draft, redraft incorrect or unclear passages and translate and insert any passages that have been omitted; f. Edit all material to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with the International Seabed Authority's standards, policies and practices; g .Ensure that all published material is accurate and conforms with the standards, policies and practices of the Authority; h. Provide authors or others submitting documentation with information on specific aspects of editorial policy and practice and assists them in the preparation of manuscripts; i. Ensure timely publication of all materials; j. Make editorial decisions with reasonable speed and communicate them in a clear and constructive manner; k. Establish clear guidelines for authors regarding acceptable practices for sharing materials and information

Education An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent degree) is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Passing the United nations Competitive Examination for Editors/Writers, Proof-readers and/or Translators/Precis-Writers is an advantage.

Work Experience A minimum of two years of experience in editing within the United Nations System or within an International Organization is desirable. Knowledge of a broad range of subjects with a recognized specialization in a particular substantive, technical or administrative area is desirable Some experience in digital workflow and knowledge of printing-related software such as Adobe, CS4, In-Copy and InDesign, as well as print production experience and familiarity with cost control measures is desirable. Knowledge of French, and knowledge of another official language of the United Nations is an Advantage.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, a perfect command of English, which must be the candidate's main language is required. Knowledge of French, and of another official language of the United Nations is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
