The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does — in programs, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children’s rights into action. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination, bias or favoritism. To the degree that any child has an unequal chance in life — in its social, political, economic, civic and cultural dimensions — her or his rights are violated. There is growing evidence that investing in the health, education and protection of a society’s most disadvantaged citizens — addressing inequity — not only will give all children the opportunity to fulfil their potential but also will lead to sustained growth and stability of countries. This is why the focus on equity is so vital. It accelerates progress towards realizing the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child https://www.unicef.org/child-rights-convention, while also supporting the equitable development of nations.

Dakar a lively and colorful costal city and is the political, commercial, and cultural capital of Senegal. It is multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-religious city and is known for its vibrant art and music scene. Being one of the safest and democratically stable countries in the sub-region, many NGOs and international organizations particularly the United Nations system are based in Senegal, especially in the capital Dakar. There are 34 agencies in Senegal and the Government is building a UN House in the new upcoming city of Diamniadio nearby Dakar and the resort area of the Petite Côte. UN agencies are expected to move in the new iconic UN House this year. The journey from Diamniadio to Dakar takes about 1 hour. There are housing possibilities in cities closer to to Diamniadio.

The Security Level in Dakar is classified as low (Level 2) as per the UN security management system in Senegal. Dakar is a family duty station, and the UN hardship level classification is B. According to UNDSS opportunistic thefts are the most prevalent crimes against UN Personnel.

Different types of short and long-term accommodation are available in Dakar: stand-alone houses, houses in gated compounds, furnished and unfurnished apartments. The accommodation facilities are in general good, and the choice is vast.

Most of international staff’s children attend international schools (French and English) with an academic system that is widely recognized abroad. International schools often include a kindergarten and pre-school classes (sometimes even a nursery) for younger children. It is advisable to ask your embassy in Dakar which schools your compatriots prefer for their children.

Work opportunities for spouses/partners are limited. However, if hired by any organization a work permit must be applied for through the same hiring organization. You might need to ask HR about the UN spouse scheme and see their advice.
