Duties and Responsibilities Background: In 2018, the United Nations (UN) launched a new systems-wide mental health and well-being strategy (the Strategy) – called “A Healthy Workforce for a Better World” (for more information please refer to: https://hr.un.org/sites/hr.un.org/files/Mental%20Health%20Well%20Being%20Strategy_FINAL_2018_ENGLISH_0.pdf).

The purpose of the strategy is to increase the effectiveness of the UN by optimizing the psychological health of its personnel, under four strategic themes:

1. To create a workplace that enhances mental and physical health and well-being; 2. To develop, deliver and continuously evaluate mental health and well-being services in all duty stations; 3. To welcome and support staff who live with mental health challenges; and 4. To ensure sustainable funding for mental health and well-being services.

The UN Workplace Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy team sits within the Office of the Director, Global Strategy and Policy Division. This team works to implement the Strategy across the UN System as well as leading implementation within the UN Secretariat.

The system-wide implementation of the strategy is governed by an inter-agency Implementation Board. The Board has identified communication and engagement as a key priority.

The UN Secretariat has established a Mental Health Leadership team to implement the strategy within the Secretariat.

A Communication and Engagement Manager is required to work with the UN System Implementation Board, the UN Secretariat Leadership Team, the Global Lead for the UN System Workplace Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy and other stakeholders to oversee communication and engagement activities for the system-wide and targeted actions with the UN Secretariat.

The duties and responsibilities of the Communication and Engagement Manager are to:

  • Under the guidance of the Global Lead, UN System Workplace Mental Health and Well-being Strategy the Consultant will: ,
  • Plan and lead activities for World Mental Health Day
  • Lead planning for the launch of the 2024 and beyond strategy
  • Prepare relevant articles
  • Prepare talking points for senior officials
  • Oversee updates of website and translation into official UN language
  • Prepare meeting notes for key meetings
  • Provide feedback for communications prepared by other team members
  • Assist with the design of the updated Mental Health and Well-being strategy
  • Performs other duties as required.

    Qualifications/special skills Master’s degree in Public Health, Communication, Business Administration, Human Resources, Mental Health or related area is required. A first-level university degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) in combination with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required. Experience in communications, mental health, public health or workplace health is desirable.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Fluency in French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
