UX Researcher for Sendai Framework Monitor

Result of Service The UNDRR RKB / Bonn office has been tasked with building and improving the Sendai Framework Monitor – an online web tool for UN Member States to undertake stronger self-monitoring in DRR as per Sendai Framework targets and the Sustainable Development Goals. As a result of this service, UNDRR will be able to undertake enhancements in the Sendai Framework Monitor with a special focus on its analytics.

Duties and Responsibilities BACKGROUND: Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 100 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community.

A key step to ensure the Sendai Framework Monitor is meeting real user needs is to conduct user research. UNDRR is undertaking this User Research over two phases. In the first phase, a series of consultations have been undertaken for Usability Testing with key stakeholders and a heuristics report has been developed.

For Phase 2 of the research project, UNDRR is seeking to recruit a consultant to refine and update the Sendai Framework Monitor (SFM) website design through a research-based approach by conducting a second round of usability testing. There will be three key areas of work that are mentioned under the Responsibilities section.

After the completion of both phases of the project, UNDRR will be able to programme an upgrading of the SFM based on the set of actionable recommendations and design inputs received from this consultancy.

RESPONSIBILITIES There will be three key areas of work: 1. In depth review and familiarization with the Sendai Framework Monitor project and ecosystem. a. Identify and document areas for improvement, particularly where design system or interactions may be improved by common best practice design patterns. Also, identify areas for improvement or user feedback beyond the website. b. Develop a research plan with clear timelines and milestones. The user research should include but not be limited to Usability testing. it should cover the following: i. Perform a second round of usability testing on new and improved designs for the Sendai Framework Monitor; ii. Collect feedback related to usability problems, as well as other barriers to data entry and adoption of the website.

2. Documentation and communicating findings from second round of usability testing and other reviews should cover the following: a. Findings organized by theme, criticality/severity, opportunity, or other way that enables easy sensemaking by UNDRR programme staff. b. Brief slide deck of major findings / opportunities. c. Debriefing sessions (ad hoc as needed) held to share research, reprioritizing research goals as required.

3. Development of designs, wireframes, concepts, flows as needed to communicate design solutions. a. First set of designs based on outcomes from the first round of usability testing. b. Second set of designs based on the outcomes from the second round of usability testing, as well as provision of some developer input.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES · Be available across many time zones for key and weekly meetings (for example ability to meet remotely simultaneously with Thailand and Europe time zone). · Include mobile and tablet screens in final round of design work completed. · Ensure that a diverse range of users are included (country users, potential country users, different country user roles, UNDRR staff, other stakeholders, etc.) · Consult with developers to prioritize research opportunities and insights. · Advocate research findings through written reports and in-person presentations.

Qualifications/special skills Skills: Technical test in the form of online portfolio review. Shortlisted candidates may be required to submit link to an online portfolio or detailed resume including, case studies, or other documentation showing their approach to user research.

Academic Qualifications: First level University Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Information Studies, Library Science, Communications, Design, Anthropology, Technology, Product Design or related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of 5 years of working experience conducting user research, conducting synthesis and analysis, and guiding how to leverage the insights or other relevant field is required. Experience of working on web platforms related to data on disaster risk reduction is desirable.

Language: Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.
