Background

To apply for this jobs please refer to http://www.ir.undp.org/content/iran/en/home/procurement.html under the subject: UNDP-Iran Request for Providing National Consultancy to “Conduct training on Psychosocial Support for Women Who Use Drugs”

Iran is heavily affected by the problem of drug use, with one of the highest rates of opiate use in the world and a significant prevalence of Amphetamine -Type Stimulants (ATS) use. A household epidemiological survey in the country conducted in 2015 estimates the life-time prevalence of drug use among the women aged 15-64 years at about 1.5% and the Iranian Drug Control Headquarters (DCHQ) has estimated that women comprise about 10% of people who use drugs in the country.

Usually, the context of lives of women are very different from men. Similarly, push and pull factors in drug use disorders among women could differ from men. The global literature shows extensive evidence of the differences between women and men regarding substance use. Studies show that women who start using drugs are more susceptible to develop an addiction. Women are also more vulnerable to drug-related pathologies and are more exposed to sexual and physical abuse and violence and to sexually transmitted infections like HIV. Psychosocial interventions are generally recognized as inherent component of responses to drug use disorders. The existing research highlights the effectiveness of this combined approach for improving treatment adherence, reducing illicit drug use, drug-related harms and mortality and above all reintegration in the society.

Through the present activity, UNODC Iran is seeking to enhance the efforts of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran in strengthening treatment of drug use disorders among women. This activity is to be implemented in close collaboration with the Iranian Drug Control Headquarters (DCHQ) under the gracious funding from the Kingdom of Norway.
