The Resident Coordinator Office as a designated representative of the UN Secretary-General in Afghanistan, the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Afghanistan guides the UN’s engagement in humanitarian and development activities in the country. The UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator’s responsibilities include ensuring the coordination of the UN’s humanitarian action and development activities, creating a platform of coordinated delivery, promoting the enhancement of national capacities, and ensuring effective advocacy of UN values, standards, principles, and activities on behalf of the UN with the highest level of Government. The Translator Officer will be part of an integrated team within the RCO supporting the RC. S/He will work under the overall guidance of the RC/HC, and under the direct supervision of the Head of the RC Office.

Under the direct supervision of RCO Head the national UN Volunteer (Interpreter/ Translator) will undertake the following tasks for the Integrated office of HC and RC: • Written translation of documents/briefing materials, taking points, press releases, statements, letters, and human-interest stories, from English to Dari and Pashto or vice versa within specified deadlines. • Ensure: - efficient, timeliness and qualitative translation - the usage of proper terminology (English, Dari and Pashto based on the nature of documents, accuracy in language and structure - confidentiality of translated materials • Revision and Proofreading: ensure full comparison of the original and translated texts, examine the document’s overall coherence, and provide a final check of text for typos, spelling, grammar, punctuation and spacing of the translation. • Provide simultaneous/consecutive/whispered interpretation services during meetings/trainings organized by RC and RCO on various topics • Perform terminology research to ensure the accuracy and appropriateness of all translations • Be responsible for ensuring quality and accuracy of the entire document before submission • Travels with RC and RCO staff (when needed) staff on their missions to the filed for interpretation and other assistance, as needed • Takes notes at meetings; takes and transcribes from dictation, recordings, and handwritten drafts. • Other translation or interpretation duties assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers Programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day). • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country. • Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results, and opportunities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc. • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers. • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
