BACKGROUND

UN agencies in Iran produce a range of key documents and publications every year. These reports require urgent and high-quality translation from English to Persian and vice versa. In order to meet the increasing needs of translation, interpretation and editing, UNICEF Iran would like to expand the pool of translators to be used by all UN agencies in Iran. In view of the above an individual contract is required to meet the needs of UNICEF Iran in this field for 12 months with the possibility to extend for another twelve (12) months.

OBJECTIVE / SCOPE OF WORK

UNICEF is seeking to have an updated professional roster of translators to provide quality, timely and professional translation services from English into Farsi and vice versa to be used across the UN in Iran, to

  • Provide accurate and consistent translation from English to Persian and vice versa for publications, technical reports, website content, newsletters, brochures, talking points and conference material (including powerpoint presentation), statements and press releases, etc.
  • Provide timely response to required service

METHODOLOGY

The contractors shall translate the documents provided as specified, upon request and receipt of duly authorized instruction from UNICEF/other UN agencies.

  • UNICEF/other UN agencies will provide a contract for each task which contains the period, nature of job, word count and timeframe (received and delivered dates)
  • The contractor should sign the contract which serves as an official agreement between UNICEF/other agencies and the service provider
  • Fees of each request to be agreed upon between the service provider and UNICEF/other UN agencies prior to commencement of assignment, based on a standard ceiling
  • The remuneration will be paid as per proposal submitted by the translator and once the fee is agreed upon and signed by both parties, it cannot be amended
  • Financial proposal to include price per word for translating regular documents and reports, and/or price per page for translating a technical report
  • Management of individual contract related to translation will be under UNICEF Iran/ Operations Section which will remain the focal point for administrative and financial queries including contract amendment.

Indicator: Quality of documents to be approved by the UN agency’s requesting unit

Timeframe: As agreed

The translator will be evaluated for:

  • Use of correct terminology and grammatical structure
  • Use of context-based and accurate equivalences for the UN jargons and technical words and expressions
  • Revised/edited before final submission, quality checked and proofread to ensure no misspelling and grammatical errors
  • Being faithful to the original document both in purpose, structure and layout
  • Fluency and natural target language
  • Consistency in tone and style matching the original text
  • Double check with the project officer/focal point of UNICEF/other UN agencies about the technical terms, the precise scope of work, and any specific expectations for each document to be translated
  • Making necessary corrections or adjustments as specified by UNICEF/other UN agencies and re-submit corrected translation
  • Timely delivery of translated materials

CONDITIONS OF WORK

Contractor to observe confidentiality and refrain from divulging any information about the content of UNICEF/other agency’s documents. The contractor will work on its own computer (s) and use his/her own office resources and materials

The service provider should possess the following qualifications:

  • Minimum BS degree in English or relating disciplines
  • Minimum 6 years of working experience in the field of translation and editing
  • Fluency in English and Persian is required
  • Membership to a Professional Translators Association will be considered an asset
  • Prior experience working with UNICEF and other UN agencies will be considered an asset
