Result of Service The contractor will be expected to interpret / translate / edit and perform other requests related to the nature of the job opening, with linguistic and grammatical accuracy and will be responsible for the following:

  • Translation and proofreading of UNRCO and UNCT internal and external documents: official documents, books, publications, brochures, Newsletters, Media Advisories and Press Releases, reports, newspaper articles and other relevant materials.
  • The translated text has to be delivered in MS Word, PowerPoint or Excel files, as required, and with English/Albanian language font support.
  • Provision of high-quality translations – adequate terminology, precise translation, understandable language, correct wording and comprehensive style, also adequate formatting and editing. The translator is expected to perform terminology research (on UN websites etc.) to ensure the accuracy and appropriateness of all translations. The translator is also responsible for ensuring quality and accuracy of the entire document before submitting it back to UNRCO.
  • Proof-reading of the materials, which will ensure internal consistency, clarity, and preciseness in used terminology and in the style of writing.
  • Provision of interpreting services (consecutive and/or simultaneous) from English to Albanian and vice versa, during public events, meetings and other occasions. (Please indicate in your motivation letter if and for which category you are skilled/trained).

    Duties and Responsibilities The Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Albania (UNRCO) has regular needs for translation and interpretation services provided by skilled and certified professionals in two languages English and Albanian. For this purpose, UNRCO requires access to stand-by contractual capacity that will facilitate easy access to the highly qualified translators.

Under the supervision of the UNRCO Head of Office, the Contractor will carry out a range of activities for various programme components.

The services required are translation and interpretation from the two languages into the two languages. The translation and interpretation services are for the regular needs of the UNRCO, UN Country Team coordination processes and other UN entities that UNRCO is supporting in the country.

In the frame of the UN support towards the preparation of the annual UN country results report, UNRCO is seeking the assistance of language contractors and/or editors to provide editing services during the period January – April 2023.

The language contractor is expected to carry out the following tasks: - Translation of Sustainable Development Newsletter – 8 pages, monthly - Translation of UN-RCO papers – 10 pages, monthly - Translation of 2023 Annual Progress Report – 75 pages - Translation of the NSDI 2030 materials – 120 pages - Translation of UN Web pages -30 pages, monthly - Simultaneous interpretation combined - 40 hours / 4 months

Written documents have to be submitted with the below specifications:

  • Check grammar (verb–subject agreement, dangling participles, incorrect or unclear use of pronouns, etc.) and punctuation for correctness and consistency;
  • Check formatting of sections, subsections, paragraphs, lists (e.g. with bullet points) for consistency;
  • Ensure that there is no ambiguity in the language used, and eliminate discriminatory language;
  • Ensure that there is used a gender sensitive language;
  • The script should be written in Times New Roman 12 pt font, with line space 1.

    Qualifications/special skills University degree (Bachelor or equivalent degree) in English / Albanian language and literature and/or Court Interpreter Certificate for English/Albanian language is required.

A minimum of five years of direct experience in translating / interpreting /copy-editing / proof reading texts in at least one of the UN Albania strategic areas of work (inclusive prosperity, quality services for all, healthy environment, good governance) with International Organizations, Government Institutions, NGO is required.

Knowledge and practice in the usage of computers and office software packages, experience in handling of web-based management systems is desirable.

Languages English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening fluency in English and Albanian are required.
