Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located at Headquarters in the Spanish Interpretation Section, Interpretation Service, Department for General Assembly and Conference Services (DGACM). Under the general supervision of the Chief of Interpretation Service, the incumbent will provide interpretation for all inter-governmental and other meetings at the United Nations.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Senior Interpreter will be responsible for the following duties:

•Services up to seven meetings per week (exceptionally eight), usually of no more than three hours duration, of various United Nations bodies. •Spanish interpreters provide interpretation, as required, into Spanish of speeches or statements given in English and French. •Routinely assigned to sensitive meetings. •Routinely functions as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting. •Assists the Chief of Section or Service, as appropriate, in the screening, training and examining of prospective interpreters and in the performance appraisal of staff interpreters in the Section. •Serves as Week-end Duty Officer for the Interpretation Service and as Chief Interpreter on missions. •May be designated as Chief of relevant Interpretation Section. •May instruct and advise interpreter trainees. •May perform other related duties as required.

Education A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status is required. Candidates for this position must have passed the United Nations Language Competitive Examination for Interpreters in the Spanish Section.

Job - Specific Qualification Candidates for this position are required to have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for Interpreters in the Spanish Section.

Work Experience At least ten years of professional interpreting experience in international organizations are required, five of which would normally have been within the UN System.

Languages For the post advertised, a perfect command of Spanish, which must be the candidate’s main language, is required. Applicants must also possess an excellent knowledge of English and French as tested by the relevant United Nations language competitive examination. NOTE: "Perfect command" equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "excellent knowledge" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified applicants may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
