Org. Setting and Reporting The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA unescwa.org) forms part of the United Nations Secretariat and, like the other regional commissions, operates under the supervision of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. ESCWA comprises 20 Arab countries in Western Asia and North Africa. ESCWA provides a framework for the formulation and harmonization of sectoral policies for member countries, a platform for congress and coordination, a home for expertise and knowledge, and an information observatory. ESCWA activities are coordinated with the divisions and main offices of the Headquarters of the United Nations, specialized agencies, and international and regional organizations, including the League of Arab States and its subsidiary bodies, and the Gulf Cooperation Council.

This post is located in the Conference Management Section (CMS), Resource Management and Service Development Division (RMSDD) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The Reviser reports to the Chief of CMS.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Reviser will be responsible for the following duties: - Revises translations and original summary records dealing with a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations. - Translates, mostly without revision, texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency. - Drafts, mostly without revision, summary records and serves as monitor of précis-writing teams. - Develops new terminology for use where none exists in the target language. - Carries out linguistic research and prepares terminological bulletins and glossaries, technical vocabularies and related reference tools. - Counsels and assists translators/précis-writers and briefs them on the procedures and practices of the Service, terminology and a broad range of subjects, as required. - Participates in the setting of terminology standards. - Supervises the work of small groups of translators/précis-writers. - Performs other related duties as required.

Planning& Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.

Education A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status is required. Candidates for this position must have passed the relevant combined United Nations Language Competitive Examination for Arabic Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors or a relevant United Nations language competitive examination for Arabic Translators held before 2017.

Job - Specific Qualification Candidates for this position must have passed the relevant combined United Nations Language Competitive Examination for Arabic Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors or a relevant United Nations language competitive examination for Arabic Translators held before 2017.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of experience in translation, précis-writing, editing, self-revision, verbatim reporting, copy preparing, proofreading or production editing is required.

Two years of experience in using United Nations or similar international organization, terminology databases and word-processing programmes is desirable.

Experience in the use of standard computer-assisted-translation (CAT) tools is desirable.

Experience using eLUNa and its revision interface is desirable.

Three years of experience working within a multilingual setting is desirable.

Experience as a self-revised translator is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. In addition, Arabic is a working language at ESCWA. For the position advertised, fluency in Arabic, which must be the candidate's main language is required. Knowledge of English, as tested by the relevant United Nations language competitive examination, is also required. Knowledge of French, as tested by the relevant United Nations language competitive examination, is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
