Morobe Development Foundation Inc. (MDF), supported by the Pawarim Komuniti Partnerships funded through Australian Aid, is carrying out a solar power project designed to provide renewable energy solutions to remote villages in Papua New Guinea. For effective planning and implementation, MDF needs accurate household counts across ten villages. Given the remote and inaccessible nature of these locations, MDF aims to utilize remote sensing methods, such as Google Earth Engine (GEE) and high-resolution satellite imagery, to identify and estimate the number of households in each village.
This assignment aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), as it contributes to sustainable rural development and energy accessibility.
Volunteer 1: Google Earth Engine (GEE) - Conduct online analysis using Google Earth Engine (GEE) to identify and estimate the number of households in the target villages. - Provide summarised data identifying household locations and counts.
Volunteer 2: High-Resolution Imagery - Use alternative high-resolution satellite imagery sources to independently identify and estimate household counts. - Cross-check and validate results obtained by the GEE exercise.
Volunteer 3: GIS Data Integration - Integrate data from the first two volunteers into GIS-based maps and databases. - Generate clear visual maps showing the distribution of households in the selected villages.
Volunteer 4: Data Validation - Validate and cross-reference household counts with secondary online sources (e.g., Google Maps, OpenStreetMap). - Document any discrepancies and assist in clarifying and resolving them.
Volunteer 5: Reporting and Documentation - Compile findings and data from all volunteers into a coherent and well-structured final report. - Clearly document methodologies, procedures, and final household estimations for submission to Pawarim Komuniti Partnerships and Australian Aid.
All roles will be conducted fully online, and Online Volunteers will receive a certificate upon successful completion of their assignments.
The candidate should have: - Familiarity with remote sensing techniques and satellite imagery analysis. - Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or related mapping software. - Proficiency in using Google Earth Engine (GEE) or similar online remote sensing platforms. - Strong analytical skills and attention to detail. - Good ability to work independently online and collaborate remotely with a team. - Strong writing skills for clear and concise documentation and reporting. - Interest or background in sustainable development, renewable energy, or rural community support is desirable.
