Papua New Guinea is home to some of the most biodiverse mangrove ecosystems in the world. These ecosystems provide critical services, including shoreline protection, carbon sequestration, and nursery habitats for marine life. However, increasing environmental pressures such as deforestation, coastal development, and climate change threaten these vital coastal zones.
MDF recently completed a field and satellite-based study titled "Inventory Assessment of Mangrove in Papua New Guinea: A Case Study of the Huon Gulf Coast." This work involved collecting primary field data and remote sensing analysis to evaluate the local mangrove forests' extent, condition, and ecological significance.
To ensure this knowledge reaches a broader scientific and policy-making audience, MDF now seeks Online Volunteer support in finalizing and submitting this manuscript for publication in a reputable peer-reviewed journal. Given the complexity of the scientific methods used and the importance of aligning the manuscript with high editorial standards, external assistance is essential.
This assignment will support MDF by: - Strengthening the scientific quality and credibility of our research output. - Enabling us to share valuable local environmental data with the global scientific community. - Informing national and regional coastal conservation strategies in PNG. - Enhancing our organizational capacity in scientific publishing and international collaboration.
Ultimately, the successful publication of this research contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water, by promoting data-driven conservation of coastal ecosystems, and to Goal 13: Climate Action, through its focus on nature-based climate resilience. It also supports broader sustainable human development by advocating for evidence-based environmental management, empowering local communities, and influencing policy through science.
The selected Online Volunteers will be expected to: - Review the full manuscript for scientific quality, clarity, structure, and alignment with journal guidelines. - Provide expert-level feedback and suggestions for improvement, particularly on remote sensing methodology and mangrove conservation analysis. - Assist with finalizing references, figures, tables, and formatting per the selected journal’s requirements. - Support the submission process, including possible responses to journal queries. - Collaborate with the MDF team via email during the assignment period.
Note: The selected Online Volunteers will be listed as a co-author in the final manuscript submitted for publication, acknowledging their substantive contribution.
The candidate should have: - At least 20 years of professional or academic experience in remote sensing and GIS, particularly with applications in coastal or mangrove ecosystems. - PhD in Remote Sensing, GIS, Environmental Science, or a related field is strongly preferred. - Demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed publications, ideally with experience in Springer Nature or similar journals. - Familiarity with journal editorial standards and submission processes.
