The Kamiali Resource Centre (KRC) was destroyed by a natural disaster in October 2016 when a mountain landslide totally covered the KRC; the ensuing flood made many people homeless. The community’s drinking water and food resources were also depleted by the natural disaster. Currently, unmonitored threats to KWMA, posed by mining, logging and criminal poaching are considerable. MDF can accomplish its environmental objectives for KWMA with support from stakeholders in environmental protection and preservation. The proposed project should constitue a great environmental and economic boon for the Lababia area, and should serve as a model for protected areas within PNG. A proposal to rebuild the Kamiali Resource Centre, developed by MDF for KFA, has been accepted as a funded project by UNDP SGP. The project is currently awaiting arrival of the UNDP SGP funds to facilitate the baseline survey required for completion of construction of the KRC
The National Government and Donor agencies will benefit from the project's published maps, updated biomass data and results from the project's water quality testing. Other data will include biomass, landuse and shoreline data, resulting from geo-statistical analysis of the KWMA. These results will include updated shape files, which will be shared on the Geo-Portal website (Biodiversity and Climate Geoportal, n.d.). With the new GIS information, BCF can build collaborative partnerships with stakeholders. In addition, hundreds of viewers and biodiversity and climate change activists will be informed of the project through social media posts, including a video of the project, produced by MDF and saved on YouTube.
MDF is looking for water engineer who will be able to provide assessment advice on a proposed water supply drilling site.
The three Online Volunteers will work as a team by sourcing literature facts and will be using data provided by the Foundations focal contact person to carry out the task diligently to ultimately assist in a water supply project development.
