MDF also proposes to develop and deliver a business model so that management plans translate into practical initiatives for execution by the community. Development of a business network plan, and creation of a business pathway, will help the local community capitalize on the self-sustaining opportunities, all of which are potentially threatened by the presence of alluvial silt in the water and the coastline. By conducting water analyses to identify potential sources of pollutants, followed by implementation of mitigation strategies and development of an economic model, the community will be empowered to provide for itself, in harmony with the environment. Research Plan for the Conservation Framework The project team will be assessing biomass and land use using GIS remote sensing, monitoring water quality using extensive water sampling and analysis, and will conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the project site to assess the buildup of sedimentation of silt as observed by remote sensing. Accessing archived satellite images: LIDAR, Landsat 8 and Landsat 5 surface reflection and data will be accessed and processed to explore the spatial pattern of land cover changes and shoreline dynamics over the past twenty years. The Google Earth Engine cloud-based data platform and ArcGIS software will be used in this stage.

The project will benefit the target population through increased public awareness of the importance of the goals of the KWMA, through increased opportunities to participate in the management of the KWMA and through the employment and business opportunities provided by the resources of a well-managed KWMA. Two members of Kamiali Foundation Association will benefit directly from the project through hands-on experience in collecting vital baseline data, through actively participating in the training of staff and volunteers, and through managing the project.
