The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the need for openly available early grade reading resources in languages children mostly use at home. In response to this need, a collaboration between UNESCO, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), ADEA, UNHCR, The Global Book Alliance as well as other partners, has established the initiative ‘Translate a Story’, to help organize the translation and proofreading of openly licensed high-quality early grade reading books into different national languages. This initiative is intended to accompany countries’ efforts in improving the ability of early age reading, particularly during the current COVID-19 pandemic where most of the children are confined at home and therefore need to get reading materials available in local languages and universally accessible through various media.
