United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (UN Women) through the Governance and Women’s Political Participation (GWPP) thematic area has been working to promote women’s leadership and participation at country level in line with international and regional standards on women’s rights. The strategic focus and main outcome for GWPP from 2016 to 2020 has been towards laws, policies, strategies as well as structures to promote women's participation in decision making at all levels in line with country’s commitments to instruments on women’s rights including the country’s constitution. UN Women under the GWPP thematic area is in the process of implementing the project on ‘Engendering Governance to Promote Peace and Security in Zimbabwe and the Women Rise in Politics (WRIP) initiative.

The Governance and Women’s Political Participation (GWPP) thematic area builds on UN Women work on women’s political participation, leadership, and women, peace and security programming. The portfolio contributes to UN Women global Flagship Projects on Women’s Political Empowerment and Leadership and Women Peace and Security, the Sustainable Development Goals, 5 and 16 and the advancement of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and UN Security Council Resolution 2250. The portfolio through existing programmes fosters increased gender-responsive national development and enhanced political participation and leadership of women in decision-making and peace processes. The objectives of the portfolio continue to be achieved through collaborations with UN agencies, particularly UNDP, government agencies, academic institutions, civil society and the private sector.

Reporting to Programme Specialist on Governance, Women’s Political Participation and Leadership – UN Women, Zimbabwe Country Office, the Programme Assistant - Governance and Women’s Political Participation contributes to the effective implementation of UN Women programmes by providing administration and logistical support necessary for the smooth implementation of programmes. S/he guides and facilitates the delivery of UN Women programmes by offering administrative support for the implementation of activities under the GWPP thematic area. She /he works in close collaboration with the operations team, UN Women RO staff, Government officials and civil society ensuring successful UN Women programme implementation of the portfolio.

Under the direct supervision of Programme Specialist on Governance, Women’s Political Participation and Leadership, who oversees and provides managerial support the GWPP thematic Area, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Provides effective support to the implementation of the Project focusing on the achievement of the following results:

• Support the implementation of the Annual Workplans based on UN Women Strategic Note, and donor project documents ; • Participate in the development of internal and donor reports on programme activities;

  1. Provides administrative and technical support to Projects focusing on achievement of the following results:

• Engages and works with corporate organisational software to provide logistical and administrative support to programmes • Assists in the development of materials for meetings, presentations and work • Compiles, analyses, summarizes data pertaining to the project, maintains records, documents and training plans for the monitoring of project implementation; • Maintain relationships with national partners to support implementation and expansion of the governance and women, peace and security programme;

  1. Provide data information and knowledge management support • Assist in the maintenance of appropriate information and documentation to track/support for programme delivery • Support the preparation of inputs to reports and provide data as needed; • Support the review of documents and identify best practices and challenges related to programme management; • Review and check substantive materials for accuracy as requested.

  2. Provide substantive inputs to advocacy, knowledge building and communication efforts • Supports the development of background documents, briefs, guidance notes, knowledge products, and presentations related to women, peace and security; • Supports the development of knowledge products on women’s political participation and leadership, women, peace and security and youth, peace and security.

  3. Participates in process towards providing inputs/recommendations for consideration to building partnerships and resource mobilization strategies • Support in the analysis and maintenance of information and databases for strengthening resource mobilisation.

(ideally one year) and/or demonstrated interest in working with government institutions, civil society. - Experience in the following areas would be considered an asset: • Programme management; • Gender equality, governance, women’s leadership, peace and security; • Report writing, research and data analysis. - Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;

Zimbabwe is located in Southern Africa and has three seasons, cool and dry from May-Aug, hot and dry from Sep-Nov, warm and wet from Dec-Apr. The capital Harare lies at an altitude of 1450m above sea level. The middle plateau is Malaria free and prophylaxis is highly recommended in low lying and hot areas. The currency in use is the Zimbabwe dollar and the United States dollar in some places. Foreign exchange bureaus are available, and all basic food and accessories are available. There are public and private health facilities as well as many social amenities available in Harare.
