Result of Service Part-time language teachers prepare and facilitate lessons, consistently deliver high quality scheduled courses, maintain up to date learning material, and correct assignments in a timely manner. They administer evaluations as needed for learner progress, report attendance, and collaborate with others according to the agreed schedule. They complete assigned projects by the deadline and maintain quality standards. Part-time language teachers work collaboratively with the UNOV/UNODC administration team and receive positive feedback from clients and supervisors. Part-time teachers also monitor students’ progress and provide feedback.

Work Location Vienna HQ / Home-based. Classes are held in the Vienna International Centre (VIC) or online, twice a week per regular courses and once a week per workshops.

Expected duration Language teachers will be issued contracts covering a period from September 2023 to February 2024. The exact number of hours to be worked during the contract period is determined once the registration period closes and the Language Programme administration team determines which courses will open.

Duties and Responsibilities The UN Language Programme in Vienna, administered by the Talent Development Team (TDT) of the Human Resources Management Service (HRMS) in the Division for Management (DM) at the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV)/United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), aims to promote multilingualism within the Secretariat and the language capabilities of its staff, as mandated by the General Assembly in its resolutions of 1968 (A/RES/2480(XXIII), A/RES/43/224 and A/RES/50/11).

To do so, the UN Language Programme in Vienna offers courses intended for non-native speakers who want to acquire language skills to communicate in a social and/or professional context. The part-time language teachers will be engaged to actively work in the development and assessment of language and communication skills offerings aligned with organizational goals and priorities and according to General Assembly mandates, UN policies and instructions on learning, and the Secretary-General´s recommendations on multilingualism.

Under the supervision of the Team Leader, Talent Development Team (TDT), the Language Teachers (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish, and German) will:

a) Plan and prepare course plans and lessons aligned with the UN Language Framework (UNLF) as well as balanced, varied and up-to-date teaching units for each assigned course; implement the curricula agreed by the Team Leader (TDT); use a detailed curriculum and specified materials to prepare lesson plans; adjust these plans according to circumstances and individual needs/abilities; select/design supplementary activities; ensure lesson-to-lesson coherence; design task-based activities to exploit linguistics and communicative potential of authentic resources aimed at developing skills in the three domains (personal, business and professional); differentiate explanations, expectations, tasks and materials according to individual needs/ abilities; keep abreast with new teaching methods;

b) Deliver interactive linguistic training in person or online, and manage and monitor participants learning: manage teacher-class interaction effectively; give clear instructions for individual and group work; deliver linguistic training in accordance with agreed plans; monitor individual and group work accurately and thoroughly; provide effective individual feedback using various methods; use appropriate technology/software/training materials to enhance the learning experience; select appropriate combination of techniques to suit learners and learning situation. Keep an updated attendance list;

c) Design/ select appropriate methods to assess learners progress; conduct and mark placement tests, (continuous and/or summative, oral and written) assessments and interviews; provide feedback to learners on their progress and ways to develop their linguistic skills; apply UNLF levels to assess proficiency in the four skill areas (Listening, Reading, Spoken Production and Interaction, Written Production and Interaction); submit progress reports at the end of each term;

d) Seek general feedback/comments/suggestions from the participants; provide a short debrief/report to the Team Leader (TDT) at the end of each term on lessons learned, attendance, participant feedback, areas for improvement; indicate materials used and evaluate these materials effectively from practical and theoretical perspectives; provide continuous feedback on the effectiveness and efficiency of the language programme;

e) Prepare the learning environment: prepare and test all support devices (computer/laptop, projector, video, presentation, flip chart, white/smart board, video player, blog, chat, social media, online homework/group work, online community, handout and other materials needed for the course);

f) Monitor and record students' attendance and maintain records for each instruction session. Bring any potential issues with attendance to the attention of the Language Programme policy and ensure all policies in this regard are enforced.

g) Contribute to a successful Language Programme semester by attending meetings when required; demonstrating positive teamwork, collaboration, and communication practices in line; proactively communicate any issues or concerns to the administration team; and actively partner with the administration team to suggest and pilot new solutions and ideas for the continued improvement of the programme.

Qualifications/special skills Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in language teaching, languages, linguistics, or a related academic area is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A minimum of five (5) years teaching experience in language instruction within the last eight years is required. Experience in working with adults in a professional training setting is required. Experience using video, computer and/or multimedia to teach language is required Experience working in a multicultural environment as a team member is desirable. Advanced computer skills are desirable.

Languages Native speaker in the target language and proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of other official UN Languages is an asset.

Additional Information The duration of each regular language course will be of 17 weeks, to be distributed as follows: 2 classes per week, 1.5 hours per class, for a total time of 51 hours per regular language course. Hence, regular courses are equivalent to 51 Language Training Service Hours paid at the rate of 50 EUR per hour. The duration of each language workshop will be of 16 weeks, to be distributed as follows: 1 class per week, 1 hour per class, for a total time of 16 hours per language workshop. Hence, workshops are equivalent to 16 Language Training Service Hours paid at the rate of 50 EUR per hour.

The Language Training Service Hour remuneration covers preparation and delivery of courses, communication with students and administration team, grading of assignments and evaluations, administration of placement tests, keeping of and reporting on attendance reports, and attending coordination meetings, as required.

Classes are held in the Vienna International Centre (VIC) or online, twice a week per regular courses and once a week per workshops.

The UNOV/UNODC Language Programme administration team reserves the right to make any changes to the course schedule as needed for the overall benefit of the programme.

Payment will be made for services, only when employed and only upon delivery of courses and/or workshops in each language during Fall Semester 2023. Engagement will be determined based on number of hours required. Part-time teachers are paid at a fixed rate for the delivery of each regular language course or workshop.

Payment is for the Total number of actual hours taught/worked will be divided in four (4) instalments. The contract does not include medical insurance nor pension allowance.

Part-time teachers are hired per term. If the service delivered is satisfactory and depending on the demand, they can be hired for the following or future term. The United Nations does not guarantee any continuation of language courses or courseload from one semester to the next.
