Contract

This is a UNV National Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Youth contracts.

“Integrated and Scalable Approach to the Mixed Migration Flows by the Borders of Türkiye - Phase I Project” aims to contribute to the Government of Türkiye’s evidence-based enhancement in border management and existing mechanisms of processing migrants in vulnerable situations in the context of mixed migration flows. The project is implemented by IOM and the main beneficiary of the project is Ministry of Interior, Presidency of Migration Management (PMM).

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Programme Associate under IBG Unit, the incumbents will be responsible for providing interpretation services at the Istanbul and Sabiha Gökçen Airports to Presidency of Migration Management (PMM) and to the beneficiaries assisted. The UN Volunteers will also be responsible for performing other related duties as assigned. In this context, the one incumbent will be based at Istanbul Airport, while the other will be based at Sabiha Gökçen Airport as IOM personnel. Both will undertake the assigned tasks and responsibilities in close communication with PMM’s relevant departments.

Under the IBG Unit the national UN Volunteer will perform the following tasks: • Provide English Turkish/Turkish-English interpretation services to the relevant department of PMM. Maintain a level of neutrality during the interpretation and avoid providing his/her personal inputs in delivering messages between the interviewer and the beneficiary. • Provide ad hoc support for written English and Turkish translations. • Comply with the IOM Standards of Conduct and the IOM Confidentiality Agreement. Always maintain a professional appearance and migrant-friendly demeanour. Maintain confidentiality and discretion in treating beneficiaries’ medical and personal information. • Immediately inform management of any problems or issues related to the daily work and make suggestions on how to improve efficiency and client service. • Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day, 5th of December). • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country. • Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities (for instance at https://vra.unv.org), • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc. • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers. - • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

• Experience in working with migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons, victims of trafficking and other vulnerable groups; is an advantage. • Proven knowledge on integration and relevant national/international policies is an asset. • Prior work experience with international humanitarian organizations, non-government or government institutions/organization in a multi-cultural setting is an advantage. • Proven analytical, interpersonal and organizational skills. • Good level of computer literacy. • Experience in liaising with governmental authorities, other national / international institutions.

One UN Volunteer will work at İstanbul Airport, and the other one at Sabiha Gökçen Airport as interpreter of IOM team.

The Summary of national UN Volunteer (Youth) Entitlement: Paid in local currency

Note: The allowances are in no way to be understood as salary, reward, or compensation in exchange for the volunteer work.

  • Current Monthly Volunteer Living Allowance is USD 1,088 (disbursing in Turkish Lira) As per the UN’s diplomatic mission status, it is not included in the National Security Institution’s (SGK) system, but can only be initiated on a private basis by UN Volunteers.
  • Private insurance: Health, dental, life and dismemberment (100%) coverage by CIGNA
  • Entry allowance: USD 400
  • Exit allowance: USD 113 per month and upon the satisfactory completion of assignment
  • Annual leave: 2.5 days accrued per calendar month
  • Free access to different learning platforms and UN & UNV network

Important Remarks: It's important to note that UNV assignments are volunteer assignments, not a form of employment. The allowances and entitlements provided to UN Volunteers are not to be interpreted as salary, reward, or compensation in exchange for the UN Volunteer’s service, but rather as support to enable participation without incurring personal costs. The provision of allowances is subject to eligibility criteria, location of the assignment and the contractual type and category.
