Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Organizational Support Section (OSS) of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism to assist in the investigation and prosecution of persons responsible for the most serious crimes under international law committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011 (IIIM). The incumbent will report to the P-4 Reviser.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Interpreter/translator will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Provides consecutive/simultaneous interpretation into Arabic from English and into English from ¿Arabic, at the duty station and on mission, both in person and via ¿remote platform, for meetings involving IIIM staff members and their interlocutors such as civil ¿society and other organizations working in the area of Syrian-related conflict. This includes ¿interpreting for senior management during meetings with high-ranking officials and when ¿required by a substantive department for meetings, and workshops;
  • Provides consecutive/simultaneous interpretation into Arabic from English and into English from ¿Arabic, at the duty station and on mission, both in person and via ¿remote platform, for the taking of confidential and sensitive statements for criminal justice ¿purposes, including detailed discussion of traumatic events which constitute evidence-based ¿material to be used in a legal setting; ¿
  • Where there are no interpretation tasks, completes translation work assigned by the supervisor; ¿
  • Assists with reviewing written statements and transcripts of interpretation to identify and correct ¿any substantive errors; ¿
  • Functions as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a meeting or interview; ¿
  • Performs other related duties, as required. ¿

Ability to use all ¿sources of references, consultation and information relevant to interpretation tasks. Ability to work ¿under pressure and maintain adequate speed and volume of output. Ability to show a high level of ¿versatility, judgement and discretion.   • TECHNOLOGICAL AWARENESS: Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitation of technology to the work of the office; actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; shows willingness to learn new technology.

    Education First level university degree from a university or institution of equivalent status is required. ¿

    Job - Specific Qualification Advanced university degree is desirable, preferably from a recognized interpretation school.¿ ¿

    Work Experience At least five years of professional interpreting and translating experience in international ¿organizations is required. ¿

    Experience interpreting witness interviews is desirable.

    Experience interpreting Arabic is desirable.

    Experience working in a criminal justice context desirable.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in Arabic and English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.

    Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
