UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child, Education

Background and justification

UNICEF’s work in Egypt is focused on promoting sustainable development with multidimensional equity for children, embodying the fair chance for every child principle.

In line with national priorities, the UNCRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child) and the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), UNICEF work in Egypt focuses on, amongst other areas, ensuring all children in Egypt regardless of the situation, receives a high-quality education.

With an expanding school population, significant neighbouring emergencies leading to refugee populations, underlying challenges of education financing, out of school children and low quality of education, UNICEF Egypt works across several major education areas:

  • Addressing the learning crisis and working with partners to ensure universal acquisition of foundational literacy and numeracy.
  • Full inclusion of the most marginalised: children with disabilities, out-of-school children, refugees and migrants, and those vulnerable children at high-risk of dropping out.
  • Building on the major investments the Ministry of Education has made in the digital environment in schools, equipping educators, parents and students with the skills and tools to innovate their teaching and learning and making sure they stay safe online. This includes expanding UNICEF’s Learning Passport for the most marginalised of learners.
  • Strengthen the planning, budgeting and monitoring capabilities of the MOETE (Ministry of Education and Technical Education), with a specific focus on gender responsive sector planning at national and sub-national levels and UNICEF is now running a series of governorate-level workshops to advance gender equality in and through education, looking at learning, environments, teaching, curriculum materials, and leadership and administration.

Other areas of UNICEF’s work include sector coordination, curriculum reform, addressing bullying and violence in schools, secondary Educaton reform and advocating for greater investment in the education sector, particularly at the ECE (Early Childhood Education) and early grades for a more equitable future for all.

An intern is requested to bring energy and insights into this programme focus on the policy and education in emergency areas of work. The selected intern would get the opportunity to experience a dynamic large education programme working on the ground directly with schools, teacher and children and at the policy level with Ministers and senior civil servants in the largest education system in the region.
