Job Description

BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

SCOPE OF WORK: The International Rescue Committee is looking for individuals to join our Health and Wellness Team as part-time interns. We connect recently-displaced refugees and immigrants to medical care and health education resources to assist in navigating the U.S. healthcare system. The Health Curriculum Development & Education Intern will primarily collaborate with the team to deliver timely and culturally-appropriate health orientations and develop health education materials.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Collaborate with Health Liaison to conduct field health orientations to orient newly arrived clients to the U.S. health care system.

• Assist clients in navigating and utilizing transportation resources such as Medicaid taxi and bus system.

• Develop health education materials as needed and conduct outreach with different partners to incorporate their training materials as ongoing educational seminars to IRC clients.

Qualifications

• Preferred: lived experience as an immigrant or refugee

• Preferred: proficiency in Dari/Pashto, Spanish, Russian, or Swahili.

• Background in public health, health sciences, or social work with experience working with vulnerable populations.

• Flexible, resourceful, and collaborative when working independently and in a team setting.

• Preferred – regular access to an insured vehicle, maintenance of clean driving record.

This position is unpaid and reports to the Health & Wellness Supervisor.
