Job Description

Background: The International Rescue Committee helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future.

Scope of Service: The Healthy Futures AmeriCorps will promote and facilitate the health and social self-sufficiency of refugees and other immigrants through education, outreach and direct support. This position reports to the Health Liaison.

Responsibilities:

•Assist IRC Health Team in ensuring clients are connecting to primary and secondary care in a timely manner through assistance in registration and appointment navigation.

•Implement and further develop Refugee Health Orientation that includes education on healthcare, Medicaid, when to call 911 and go to the emergency room or when to go to urgent care, how to order free Medicaid transportation to become more self-sufficient, and inform them of other insurance benefits they can access.

•Teach clients and practice utilizing Medicaid taxi services if they need support after the health orientation.

•Explain what clients need to assist with clinic check-in, such as ID and insurance and provide information on clinic locations and phone numbers for the nearest primary care, pharmacy and urgent care.

•Explain the clients’ rights to have interpreter services in the clinical setting and that if they have difficulty getting an interpreter to imform us.

•Deliver Health Assessment (pre- and post-test) to measure client’s understanding and retention of Health Orientation materials. Upload the assessment to their client health folder and document the health orientation in the Virginia Newcomer Inforamation System (VNIS).

•Participate in all program meetings, development activities, and other meetings as needed

Qualifications

•Strong communication skills with fluency in written and spoken English; Bilingual ability in one of the predominant languages of the local client base is desired

•Demonstrated experience working in a multicultural environment

•Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)

•Must have a valid driver’s license and consistent access to reliable transportation

•Must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident and authorized to work in the U.S.

•Must be at least 18 years old

•Must commit to one full term of service

•Must be high school graduates, GED recipients, working toward attaining a high school diploma or GED during their term of service.

•Must complete a National Service Criminal History check

Please note this position is an AmeriCorps role starting in September where the living stipend is $28,800. Upon completion of service, AmeriCorps member will be eligible for an education award of approx. $7,395.

Proposed activities will be supported, in part, with federal funds from the AmeriCorps State program subgranted through the Commonwealth of Virginia, Virginia Department of Social Services. Activities are contingent upon funding availability and award from AmeriCorps.
