How can you make a difference?

To be able to meet UNICEF’s ongoing translation needs in a punctual and responsive manner, office plans to establish local roster of Translators/Interpreters from which UNICEF Country Office can sign annual contracts with the selected candidates. Such contracts will continue to respect the maximum duration (a maximum cumulative duration of 11.5 months in any 12-month period) and breaks in service.

UNICEF will use services of translators and interpreters for providing quality, timely and professional written translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpretation services during the meetings, conferences, seminars and other public events from English into Azerbaijani, from Azerbaijani into English, and from time to time from Russian into English and vice versa.

Scope of Work:

Production of high quality written translations of UNICEF texts:

  • Texts for translation will include but not limited to: publications, documents, manuals, brochures, reports, presentations, official letters, press releases etc.
  • The Contractor will assure quality control mechanisms are in place, including proofreading and revision of translations, such that texts (as well as graphical information with description in original language) returned to UNICEF are complete; 100% accurate translations of the source text, of high quality in terms of clarity and style; appropriate to the purposes of UNICEF; and free of grammatical, terminological, orthographical, typographical, or structural errors.
  • UNICEF amendments/updates: using MS WORD files with tracked changes in the source document, the contractor is to provide additional translation and revision of existing text passages, including repositioning of text, to ensure final translated documents match amended source text.

Oral consecutive translation and simultaneous interpretation of working meetings, conferences, seminars, forums, trainings, round tables, press conferences, etc:

  • The Contractor will provide high quality simultaneous and consecutive interpretation services during meetings, workshops, seminars, field visits and other activities (including Question and Answer session right after the event). The contractor shall ensure effective and efficient provision of services while maintaining full confidentiality in all aspects of assignment, management of information and follow up on deadlines and commitments made.
  • On an ad hoc basis the Contractor will be requested to provide high quality simultaneous/consecutive interpretation and written translation from/into English, Azerbaijani, Russian.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

- Bachelor’s degree in foreign languages (English), translation or in social sciences (Master’s degree would be advantage);

- At least five years experience in translation/interpretation, preferably in the context of the United Nations or other international organizations;

- Good Azerbaijani and English writing skills; good translation skills with capacity to detect and understand nuances in the original text; good grasp of the subject matter; ability to use all sources of reference; and ability to maintain an adequate speed and volume of output;

- Outstanding time-management, organizational and interpersonal skills;

- Strong communication skills;

- Proven flexibility to accommodate urgent requests for translation;

- Fluency in written and spoken English and Azerbaijani; Russian language is an asset.

Interested candidates must submit the following documents/information to demonstrate their qualifications:

  1. CV and Cover Letter;
  2. Financial proposal;
  3. At least three references of past experience in similar assignments.

The Financial proposal should specify separately the hourly/half and full days fees for consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, written translation.

Candidates will be technically and financially evaluated by the Evaluation Panel. Only those candidates who obtain a total score of 70% and above will be included in the roster.

Remarks:

All consultants & individual contractors regardless of contract duration must complete the applicable mandatory online courses prior to signature of contract. The link to these courses will be provided during the selection process for the successful candidates.

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted and advance to the next stage of the selection process.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
