As insecurity in the Central Sahel continues to spread to coastal countries, children and their families are increasingly at risk. The deterioration of the security situation in Burkina Faso led to an upsurge in numbers over the course of 2023. As of 26 August 2024, Côte d’Ivoire hosted an estimated 64,306 refugees/asylum seekers from Burkina Faso. The majority of forcibly displaced persons in northern Côte d’Ivoire are women and girls (55%), while around 20,500 (31%) are school-age children, and more than 20% are under the age of five. Some 51,800 refugees/asylum seekers have settled in host villages, additionally straining communities with preexisting vulnerabilities. The flow from Burkina Faso is likely to continue or increase. Some 19,700 new arrivals have been reported in 2024. (See breakdowns in the tables below) UNICEF's response is part of the “North-East Resilience Program of the United Nations System in Côte d'Ivoire” ; “Gulf of Guinea Joint Response Plan for refugees, asylum seekers and host communities - Côte d’Ivoire Response Plan” and the 2024 Response in Coastal Countries Linked to Central Sahel Crisis Spillover (HAC) Appeal. UNICEF aims to support refugees/asylum seekers and host community children and their families affected by the Sahel crisis through provision of essential services in health, nutrition, WASH, education, protection and social protection. Strengthening of national systems and capacities to support and integrate refugees/asylum seekers’ children and fostering of social cohesion between refugees/asylum seekers and host communities will remain at the core of program priority. To this end, UNICEF will work closely with the Ministries of Education, Youth, Hydraulic, Interior, Health, Protection and the Regional authorities of Tchologo and Bounkani and other partners to ensure sustainability of results achieved by integration of support services within the national systems. The UN Volunteer will support the Coordination UNICEF's response to the Sahel crisis in line with of the “North-East Resilience Program of the United Nations System in Côte d'Ivoire”; Gulf of Guinea Joint Response Plan for refugees, asylum seekers and host communities - Côte d’Ivoire Response Plan” and the “2024 Response in Coastal Countries Linked to Central Sahel Crisis Spillover (HAC) Appeal”
