Org. Setting and Reporting

The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy-oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region. This position is located in the Russian Language Unit, in the Conference and Documentation Services Section. The Section reports to the Deputy Executive Secretary for Programme Support. The incumbent reports to the Language Reference Assistant.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Language Reference Assistant, and overall supervision of the Reviser, the incumbent is required to perform the following functions: • Produces camera-ready documents for reproduction by formatting documents in desktop publishing layout. Incorporates changes as marked by editors, translators and revisers, ensuring that the final version of the document conforms to, as the case may be (a) the draft translation as to contents, and/or (b) the original language manuscript as to format and typography, in accordance with existing editorial guidelines. • Performs proof-reading functions ensuring that changes have been incorporated as marked in the draft copy and alerting the responsible authority if obvious errors or discrepancies are found in the translated text. • Participates, as a member of a team, in the production of parliamentary and miscellaneous documentation, supplements and sales publications, by preparing desktop publishing layout of the final product in relevant language for reproduction in hard copy and electronic dissemination. • Ensures, in accordance with existing guidelines, that all manuscript elements, including text, headings, items in lists, tabular and graphical elements, footnotes, attachments, front and back matter and spine, and page numbers, have been properly included and cross-linked, as appropriate; numerical data have been correctly transcribed; obvious errors, discrepancies or incongruities as to content, format and typography have been corrected. • Aligns bi-texts in order to support the production of high-quality translation memories for computer-assisted translation (CAT), machine translation (MT) and related workflow improvements. • Compiles submitted corrections and edits documents in relevant language, according to required format. • Rotates in day and night shifts, as needed. • Stays available for overtime and on-call assignments, depending on the needs of the service.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required. A first-level university degree in combination with one year of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of three years of required experience.

Work Experience

A minimum of three years (or one year if graduated with a first-level university degree) of progressively responsible experience in desktop publishing, including draft typing, copy editing, proof-reading and typographical layout is required. Experience in the United Nations Common System or international organizations is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, candidates must have Russian as their primary language with proficiency in spelling and grammar. Knowledge of English is required.
