Job Description

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. The IRC in Italy provides essential safety, empowerment, education, livelihood and health services to migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.

Our programs operate across Italy, including in Trieste, Milan, Rome, Turin and various locations in Sicily and Calabria, with a strong focus on supporting the most vulnerable populations, such as women and children.

Job Overview:

The Editorial and Communication Officer will support the communication activities of the IRC Italy country program under the guidance of the Associate Director for Global Public Affairs & Communications. They will also be a key member of the Refugee.Info project team—an innovative initiative that leverages social media to communicate with refugees and asylum seekers, respond to their questions, and provide timely information. The Officer will be responsible for monitoring relevant information, producing and updating multimedia content, and managing the Refugee.Info Facebook page and website.

Major Responsibilities: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Refugee.Info Italy – Content Creation

• Develop engaging multimedia content for Refugee.Info digital platforms.

• Collaborate with the Refugee.Info Project Manager and Moderation Lead to identify information needs and implement an editorial calendar and ad campaigns.

• Research training opportunities, courses, and initiatives relevant to migrants and refugees for publication on Refugee.Info social media.

• Manage and maintain the Refugee.Info website and social media under the supervision of the Project Manager.

• Build target audiences for ad campaigns and maintain a strong online presence.

• Liaise with the IT team to ensure smooth platform operations.

• Participate in Refugee.Info team meetings.

Social Media and Web Analytics

• Support the development of mechanisms to track and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs).

• Analyze social media growth, engagement, and audience behavior using analytical tools and share insights with editorial teams.

• Monitor web and social media KPIs, flag issues, and recommend improvements to the digital and marketing strategy.

• Use tools such as Google Analytics, Zendesk Explore, and Facebook Analytics to generate insights.

General Communications Support

Client-Facing Communication

• Assist program teams in disseminating information about program activities to communities (both online and offline).

Media Relations (National and International)

• Identify and pitch timely media opportunities to the Global Crisis & Response Communications (GCRC) team.

• Contribute to the development of press releases, quotes, and statements.

• Provide translation support for global media products.

• Host journalists visiting IRC programs in Italy.

• Contribute to quarterly media monitoring and reporting.

Content and Digital Campaigns

• Identify compelling client and program stories for global campaigns and pitch evergreen content ideas to GCRC.

• Support the development of content for global IRC campaigns.

Strategic Communications

• Develop and implement a communications strategy to raise the profile of IRC’s programs and partnerships in Italy and in target media markets.

• Collaborate with the country team and grants colleagues to fulfill donor visibility requirements.

• Partner with the Country Director, Head of Programs, and regional communications team to develop tools, products, campaigns, and initiatives.

Job Requirements:

Education: Degree in Journalism, Communications, Development Communication, Social Sciences, or a related field.

Work Experience: • Minimum of 2 years of experience in communications and media, preferably in the NGO sector.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills with diverse stakeholders.

• High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Professional, Google Workspace, and social media platforms.

• Experience with infographic software and/or graphic design.

• Excellent command of Italian and English, both spoken and written.

• Strong interpersonal and analytical skills; ability to collaborate across cultures and organizational units.

Working Environment:

This position is open to remote work from within Italy. Preference will be given to candidates based in Milan or Rome.
