Org. Setting and Reporting The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA unescwa.org) forms part of the United Nations Secretariat and, like the other regional commissions, operates under the supervision of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. ESCWA comprises 20 Arab countries in Western Asia and North Africa. ESCWA provides a framework for the formulation and harmonization of sectoral policies for member countries, a platform for congress and coordination, a home for expertise and knowledge, and an information observatory. ESCWA activities are coordinated with the divisions and main offices of the Headquarters of the United Nations, specialized agencies, and international and regional organizations, including the League of Arab States and its subsidiary bodies, and the Gulf Cooperation Council.

This position is located within the Conference Management Services Section (CMSS), Resource Management and Service Development Division (RMSDD) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The Arabic Editor reports directly to the Chief of CMSS.

Responsibilities Within limits of delegated authority, the Arabic Editor will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Edits texts of a specialized or technical nature in order to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice.
  • Carries out more extensive editing where required, including rewriting, abridging and restructuring texts for greater readability and better logical sequence.
  • Uses all sources of information for terminology and substantive research on the subject, including electronic sources and electronic tools for online editing.
  • Consults with author departments and carries out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify substantive errors.
  • Checks his/her language version against the language of the original draft, redrafts incorrect or unclear passages and translates and inserts any passage that has been omitted.
  • Provides authors or others submitting documentation with information on specific aspects of editorial policy and practice and assists them in the preparation of manuscripts.
  • Performs other related duties as required, including occasional translation, copy preparation and drafting scripts, key messages and stories.

  • Technological awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitations of technology to the work of the office; actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; shows willingness to learn new technologies.

    Education A first level university degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Candidates for this position must have passed the combined United Nations Language Competitive Examination for Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers/ Proofreaders/ Production Editors in the relevant language or any United Nations language competitive examination for editing and translation in the Arabic language held before 2017.

    Work Experience A minimum of two years of experience in editing for Arabic is required. Experience in editing within the United Nations is desirable. Knowledge of a broad range of subjects dealt with by the regional commission: social, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical) with a recognized specialization in a particular substantive, technical or administrative area is desirable. Experience in other language functions such as translation is desirable.

    Languages English and French are two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. In addition, Arabic is also a working language at ESCWA.

For this position, a perfect command of Arabic, which must be the candidate's primary language, and an excellent knowledge of English are required.

Knowledge of French is desirable.

Note: "Fluency" equals a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of 'confident' in two of the four areas.
