Result of Service Under the direct supervision of the Associate Programme Officer – Asia Pacific Clean Air Partnership and in coordination with the project team, the consultant will undertake English editing and proof-reading services for the SIG Air Quality Assessment Report and a good practice summary developed under the project “Beating air pollution in SIG through evidence-based solutions” to ensure clarity, readability, and consistency, in accordance with the UNEP Publications Policy and Guidelines, UNEP Referencing and Style Guide, and UNEP Editorial Guide.

The consultant will deliver the following key outputs:

1. First draft of the edited SIG Air Quality Assessment Report (English) Delivery date: 05 January 2023 Deliverables: Edit and proofread the draft of the SIG Air Quality Assessment Report to ensure clarity of messages and overall flow of storyline, readability, and consistency. This includes to:

  • Revise to ensure that the draft report complies with UNEP Referencing and Style Guide and UNEP Editorial Guide;
  • Check and correct spellings of all texts including content, box chart, graph, table, etc., and produce the final version ready to be formatted for publication;
  • Ensure that technical terms, wordings, and structured sentences are used correctly, as well as intended messages from authors are delivered;
  • Recommend potential infographics for the report and report content appropriate for boxes;
  • Propose wording/sentences that simplify language to be understandable by nontechnical audience and non-native English readers/policy makers; and
  • Proofread all texts after they are laid out

2. Final draft of the edited SIG Air Quality Assessment Report (English) Deliverable date: 14 February 2023 Deliverables: Address comments received on the First draft of the edited SIG Air Quality Assessment Report in coordination with the project team. Undertake proofreading of the texts after they are laid out before publishing in English.

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP’s Asia and the Pacific Office geographically serves 41 countries across the region to promote and implement sustainable development solutions. It assists countries of the region pursue sustainability, particularly in their implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including technical expertise, facilitating access to finance, undertaking cutting-edge science-policy assessments, offering advisory services and strengthening laws, policies, management and governance.

UNEP works with national and local authorities, civil society, other UN organizations, research institutions and the private sector to catalyze the efficient use of the region’s natural assets and reduce the degradation of the environment. The first United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) resolution on air quality adopted in 2014 called on UNEP to undertake assessments focused on identifying gaps to address air pollution, including monitoring and control, opportunities for cooperation, and mitigation opportunities. This was reinforced by UNEA resolution 3/8 on ‘Preventing and reducing air pollution to improve air quality globally’ which stressed the need for further sharing of existing knowledge on science, technology, policy, measures, and best practices related to addressing air pollution.

The Project “Beating Air Pollution in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi (SIG) through Evidence-Based Solutions” aims to assess the air pollution reduction interventions in SIG by reviewing the progress in air quality action and improvement at the national and local level from 2005 to 2040 to (1) increase understanding and awareness on the status of air pollution issue, including sources of air pollution, and on the actions being taken by relevant stakeholders to address this issue; (2) improve future policy action to reduce air pollution with better understanding of the effectiveness of policies and measures in place; and (3) identify good practices to inspire other cities and countries to beat air pollution.

The project seeks to recruit a consultant to provide editing and proof-reading services in English for the SIG Air Quality Assessment Report and a good practice summary developed under the project “Beating air pollution in SIG through evidence-based solutions”.

Qualifications/special skills Academic: University degree preferably in English or similar language-related academic qualification, environmental science communication, journalism, or communications.

Experience: - A minimum of 5 years international experience and proven skills in substantive review and editing of publications, especially those produced by the United Nations; - At least 3 years of progressive experience in English editing and proofreading; - Familiarity with UNEP Referencing and Style Guide and UNEP Editorial Guide is desirable; - Experience with working for the UN or other international development organization is desirable.

Special knowledge and skills: - Excellent proven written and oral communication skills; proofreading, editing and writing skills in English. - Competent in usage of MS Office programmes (MS Word, Excel, Power point, etc.). - Ability to understand complex technical terms and documents related to air pollution and environment. - Experience in communication on matters related to air pollution is an asset.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required.
