ABOUT THE JOB

DRC’s Economic Recovery aims to improve rural livelihoods and resilience of target groups, including men, women, boys, girls, youth, and persons with disabilities. DRC is seeking an agriculture officer for Kunar office to support the team in implementing EC Life project activities. The project aims to protect and stabilize rural livelihoods and build resilience of people and communities in Afghanistan. The project seeks to maintain essential services in agricultural livelihoods, promote rural businesses and income-generating activities, and strengthen community engagement and participation to support community-led development, social cohesion, and peace. The agriculture officer will be responsible for supporting the planning, managing, and reporting of agricultural components for the project. The position holder will work closely with the EcRec manager, team leader and field officers and target groups to design and implement agricultural interventions.

Responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of the Economic Recovery Team leader with technical inputs from Economic Recovery Manager, the Economic Recovery officer- Agriculture is responsible for:
  • In collaboration with implementing partners, provide technical support to local farmer groups to deliver farm-extension activities in farmer communities by transferring technical know-how and contemporary skills in climate-smart agriculture.
  • To work jointly with value chain and economic recovery officers to ensure entrepreneurial services are considered in agriculture activities.
  • To contribute to agriculture studies, research, and assessments.
  • To develop technical & training materials, and manual for climate smart agriculture).
  • To develop the local farmers/beneficiary’s capacity through conducting trainings, workshops, seminars, demonstration plots establishment, supervision, given technical advice and defining modern techniques.
  • Identifying program beneficiary farmers and traders for the program implementation of the technical capacity building & participation in BNFS assessment process for ME, SME, and cash for work projects.
  • Provide support to the team leader for planning and designing agriculture and food security activities (crop and livestock farming, income generating, irrigation, agricultural market development and promotion, etc.)
  • Develop monthly and quarterly work and budget plans, including monthly monitoring plans, for agricultural components of the project.
  • Participate in baseline surveys and needs assessments to generate appropriate livelihood data in determining community needs and gaps.
  • Conduct technical assessments and surveys (agriculture, market, and livelihoods) to design and implement agricultural, including livestock, related activities.
  • Facilitate the identification, targeting and selection of agriculture, livestock, and income generation target groups for livelihood interventions (inputs, materials, and trainings, etc.).
  • Plan and organize trainings and demonstrations on improved farming and income generating activities (crop production, livestock raising and market/business skills) in coordination with field staff, service providers and/or field-level extension agents.
  • Develop field-level distribution plans and deliver livelihood inputs and materials, including technical demonstrations, to target groups.
  • Conduct regular field-level monitoring visits and provide regular internal reporting using standard tools and formats.
  • Take the lead in facilitating linkages between producers (farmers, agricultural and livestock groups, etc.) and market actors (input suppliers, processors, traders, buyers, etc.).
  • Conduct capacity needs assessment of field/technical assistants and field mobilizers and design appropriate capacity building interventions.
  • Analyze risks and take proactive role in developing and implementing risk mitigation strategies at local level.
  • Establish and maintain good relationships and coordination with community representatives, relevant local authorities in districts and provinces.
  • Participate in other duties assigned by the line manager.

ABOUT YOU

To be successful in this role you must have:

Experience and technical competencies:

  • At least 3 years of work experience in agriculture or other relevant studies in line with the responsibilities of the position.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, reporting, and leading the team in order to implement economic recovery project properly as well as representing DRC in meetings/trainings.
  • Working experience with communities especially in implementing economic recovery programs.
  • Good management and leadership skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, proven self-initiative and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to travel to the remote parts of the eastern region.

Education/qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in agriculture, or another relevant field.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills

Languages:

  • English (Advance)
  • Pashto (Fluent)
  • Dari (Fluent)

We Offer:

  • Contract length: to 31st of December 2024 with the possibility of Extension.
  • Band: NMH
  • Designation of Duty Station: Based in Kunar with possible visits to Nuristan province
