Org. Setting and Reporting The Trade and Market Intelligence (TMI) is part of the International Trade Centre’s Division of Market Development (DMD). It has developed a range of tools for strategic and operational market research, focusing on products and markets of interest to developing countries and economies in transition, assessing sectoral and national trade performance and trade competitiveness. In parallel to the development and implementation of its market analysis tools, TMI delivers trainings and capacity building programmes on market analysis and research for effective export marketing and strategy development. Drawing on the data and analytical indicators in the tools together with additional desk and empirical research, TMI also conducts studies and analyses tailored to the needs of trade policy officials in national ministries and trade support institutions focusing on strategies for improving trade competitiveness and identifying opportunities for product and market diversification. The goal of this job function is to coordinate a project that foresees the development of a new Competitiveness Observatory for West Africa.

Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Senior Market Analyst and the general guidance of the Chief, Trade and Market Intelligence, the incumbent will: - Develop socio-economic databases and qualitative information necessary to assess competitiveness and value chain development in West Africa. - Interpret, applies and, as necessary, adapts quantitative models to (i) identify promising value chains and (ii) determine trends, patterns and relationships and to analyse the effects of alternative policies and assumptions on competitiveness. - Draft specified inputs for technical papers and analytical studies on selected global, regional, national or sector aspects of competitiveness and value chain development. - Attend international, regional, and national meetings to collect information and to engage with regional stakeholders. - Assist in the organization and servicing of events and meetings on competitiveness and value chain development in West Africa. - Prepare speeches and other inputs for presentations by senior staff. - Organize training seminars for national experts. - Prepare documentation for technical cooperation programmes and projects. - Monitor, backstop and assess the implementation of technical cooperation programmes and projects. - Perform other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit’s services.

    Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or related field.

A first-level university degree in combination with as additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of relevant experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area is required.

Experience with trade development projects implemented in West Africa is desirable

Languages For the position(s) advertised, fluency in both English and French is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

This is a temporary appointment for an initial 6 months dependent on actual start date around early July (maternity leave cover) and may be subject to extension.
