The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the UN Secretariat department responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to complex emergencies and natural disasters. OCHA also ensures that there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response effort.

OCHA Sudan addresses and facilitates issues relating to coordination, communications and humanitarian financing, and serves the entire humanitarian community. In doing this, OCHA works with the Sudanese Government's Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) and other government counterparts. OCHA provides support to the Humanitarian Coordinator (HC) and the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) in Sudan. Working with the entire humanitarian community, OCHA looks to foster a conducive operating environment that facilitates the effective delivery of humanitarian assistance (both material assistance and protection assistance). Crucially, OCHA promotes compliance with humanitarian principles in the humanitarian response. This is an essential element of effective humanitarian coordination and is central to establishing and maintaining access to affected populations, particularly in conflict-affected areas of Sudan.

Under the guidance and supervision of the Head of Sub-Office and direct supervisor, the Driver provides reliable and safe driving services to OCHA staff members & UN officials and visitors ensuring highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues. The Driver also demonstrates a client-oriented approach, courtesy, tact and ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.

Upon request of the supervisor, the Driver can be also required to provide driving services to the operations and programme staff in the CO, Consultants and Experts and UN staff on mission.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle
  • Availability of documents/ supplies; provision of supporting documents related to vehicle expenditures.
  • Uphold minimum standards related to security, health, safety, and well-being harmonious working environment
  1. Ensures provision of reliable and safe driving services by a) driving office vehicles for the transport of OCHA Head of Office, other high-ranking officials and visitors and delivery and collection of mail, documents and other items, and b) meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport including visa and customs formalities arrangement when required.
  2. Ensures cost-savings through proper use of vehicle through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports, on time to ensue efficiency and readiness.
  3. Ensures proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle (and any other equipment such as a generator) through timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes, car washing, etc. Vehicle is fueled on a timely and need basis, consumption is tracked and request for fuel is done proactively.
  4. Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, necessary spare parts in the assigned vehicle; Ensure provision of supporting documents vehicle related expenditures.
  5. Ensures that all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents.
  6. Meet and uphold minimum standards of conduct expected of all OCHA personnel duty of care relating to security, health, safety, and well-being; apply respectful and harmonious working environments.

The key results have an impact on the accurate, safe, cost-effective and timely execution of the CO services; Proper functioning of vehicle and other equipment (such as a generator), minimum standards and duty of care and harmonious working environment.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Secondary Education. Valid Driver’s license.

Experience:

2 years’ work experience as a driver; safe driving record; knowledge of driving rules and regulations and skills in minor vehicle repair.

Language Requirements:

Fluency in the language of the duty station.

Knowledge of The UN language of the duty station.
