The United Nations People of African Descent (UNPAD) is a UNICEF Employee Resource Group (ERG) with a mission to promote the equal inclusion, recognition and access for people of African Descent in the United Nations system. UNPAD is a global UN Affinity Group established in 2016 in the United Nations Secretariat.

The Consultant will support UNICEF’s UNPAD global efforts in achieving a working environment that is free of racial and all other intersectional forms of prejudice and discrimination against People of African Descent. The Consultant will support the development, implementation and monitoring of anti-black racism diversity and inclusion initiatives outlined in the Task Team Action Plan; build partnerships; and collaborate to share knowledge on diversity and inclusion throughout UNICEF.

The Consultant will report to the UNPAD co-chairs and Executive Committee, while working in collaboration with the Division of Human Resources and the Culture and Diversity team in the Office of the Executive Director.

Main responsibilities will include:

Support the development, implementation and monitoring of anti-black racism, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.

Design and implement a network awareness strategy (inclusive of campaigns and activities) to ensure all employees of African descent in UNICEF are aware of the network, its support mechanisms, to boost network membership within UNICEF.

Support UNPAD to roll out the initiative “Let’s speak about race and discrimination” and other internal initiatives to address racism within UNICEF

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education

Master’s degree or equivalent in social sciences, gender, human rights, international development, management, economics, or a related field

A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree

Advanced studies/certification/training in the field of diversity and inclusion or organizational culture, psychology, change management is preferred.

Experience in data analytics and project management is an advantage.

Work experience

At least 5 years of professional experience in Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, civil rights, gender equality, social justice, or human rights.

At least 3 years of experience in programme management and policy development

Experience working in Diversity and Inclusion, specifically anti-black racism, and discrimination issues, preferably in an advisory capacity

Experience in working on innovation and change management initiatives is desirable.

Language

Fluency in English is required

Knowledge of the other UN official working language is an asset

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
