Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is an international agreement on good land stewardship. It helps people, communities, and countries to create wealth, grow economies and secure enough food and water and energy, by ensuring land users have an enabling environment for sustainable land management. Through partnerships, the Convention’s 197 Parties set up robust systems to manage land degradation and drought promptly and effectively. Good land stewardship based on a sound policy and science helps integrate and accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, builds resilience to climate change and prevents biodiversity loss. Land also plays a key role in the prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, securing rural livelihoods and creating green jobs, supporting community resilience and maintaining the sustainable delivery of ecosystem services.

The functions of the secretariat are, among others, to make arrangements for sessions of the Conference of the Parties (COP) and its subsidiary bodies. In addition, the secretariat also provides assistance to Parties in implementing the Convention.

Digital Communication Officer is responsible for enhancing and guiding UNCCD’s digital presence and strategies. To this end, s/he oversees and undertakes the development, production and design of compelling interactive, visual communications and digital products; monitors and analyzes UNCCD website analytics to inform digital strategies; provides guidance and training on digital technologies and standards; and guides on/supports special projects and initiatives, such as web-based portals, campaigns and partnerships.

This position is located in the UNCCD Headquarters in Bonn, Germany. The incumbent reports to the Chief, Communications Unit.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Digital Communication Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

Website development and maintenance: - Coordinates the ongoing maintenance of UNCCD websites. Creates new pages sourcing stories, assets (documents, audiovisual materials, etc.) and data from UNCCD Units and Global Mechanism and other UN agencies. - Coordinates the development of new sites, products and features on the UNCCD web platform in close collaboration with UNCCD offices and external contractors. - Monitors web analytics, produces regular reports and recommends improvement of features, services, tools, design and usability. - Coordinates ongoing improvements and development of the Drupal content management system. - Contributes to UNCCD’s communication strategy, planning future web-based communication initiatives. - Monitor and report on website analytics to inform digital strategies online (e.g. user experience, information architecture, SEO, etc). - Develops and maintains user guides and training material.

Digital strategy development and implementation: - Develops and maintains a digital content strategy and calendar, liaising with all relevant UNCCD staff (in HQ and Regional Liaison Offices) to ensure high quality, consistent content to drive growth and relevance of UNCCD digital channels. - Keeps abreast of developments in digital communications and makes recommendations on tools/software/technologies and services to enhance UNCCD’s digital presence and conceptualize creative opportunities for digital innovation. - Conceptualizes and implements digital campaigns and initiatives in support of UNCCD’s communications and advocacy objectives, including development of social media toolkits and other creative assets, and advises on effective strategies for their dissemination. - Manage relationships with external vendors and supervises the production schedules and work of designers (interactive, web, UX) and developers (web, mobile) in the development and production of interactive, visual communications and digital products. - Provide guidance to country and regional offices on interactive and digital communications standards, tools, and trends;

Content management coordination: - Develops, maintains and implements editorial guidelines and content management system to ensure compliance with UNCCD corporate website/brand image, web accessibility guidelines and UN OICT standards, guidelines and procedures. - Develops accurate, compelling and timely website and social media content in coordination with relevant UNCCD Units and the Global Mechanism and under the overall guidance of Chief, Communications Unit. - Provides training and support to editors on the use of the content management system, editorial guidelines and best practices in web communications, including web accessibility, search engine optimization, image selection and editing. Manages user access and permissions. - Provides first-level support for web editors and coordinates the resolution of issues with the technical team and/or external vendor(s) where necessary. -Performs any other job-related activities as required to achieve the goals and objectives of the UNCCD.

Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communications, business, management, digital marketing, media studies or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience At least five years of progressively responsible experience in digital communications, digital marketing, website delivery projects working with content management systems (CMS), building successful landing pages, campaign tracking, social media platform planning and posting or related field, including at least two years at the international levels is required. A minimum of three years of experience in managing websites is required.

Experience with responsive design website development and website migration is required.

Experience working with Drupal or related content management systems is highly desirable.

Experience contributing to a digital communication strategy in an international organization is desirable. Experience in the United Nations system or a comparable international organization is desirable.

Languages For the position advertised, fluency in English language is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is also desirable.
