The Gambella Region, situated in the southwestern part of Ethiopia, is home to an estimated population of 547,000, as reported by the CSA in 2007. Additionally, Gambella hosts over 386,000 South Sudanese refugees across its seven refugee camps. Administratively, the region is divided into three zones (Nuer, Anuak, and Majang), encompassing 13 woredas (districts), one city administration, and a special woreda. Renowned for its rich and diverse natural resources, the Gambella Regional State has unfortunately been plagued by recurrent man-made and natural calamities. Among these, tribal conflicts, attacks by unidentified armed groups (UAG), and cross-border incursions from South Sudan stand out as major challenges, resulting in displacement and loss of life among the region's inhabitants. The climate of Gambella is characterized by hot and humid conditions, with maximum temperatures reaching around 35°C just before the onset of the rainy season in May. The annual mean temperature hovers around 20°C, accompanied by an average annual rainfall of approximately 1400mm. The wet season spans from May to October, rendering significant portions of the region inaccessible. Serving as the capital of the Gambella regional state, Gambella town is situated west of Addis Ababa, with a driving distance of 714 kilometers between the two cities.
