This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations established in 1948. The objective of WHO is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health. WHO achieves its goals by performing its essential functions: 1. Take a leadership role in key health issues and create partnerships when joint action is needed; 2. Set research priorities and encourage the acquisition, application and dissemination of useful knowledge; 3. Setting standards and criteria and encouraging and monitoring them; 4. Develop ethical and evidence-based policies 5. Provide technical support, be an agent of change and build institutional capacity in a sustainable way; 6. Monitor health status and assess health trends.

In the context of WHO’s 13th General Programme of Work (GPW) and its triple-billion strategy, the Communications Specialist will support the WHO Angola office to boost communication initiatives, ensure greater support for the programs, aiming at reaching three billion, and improve reputation, credibility, and resource mobilization.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Communication Officer or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the Communications Specialist will:

• Supervise and moderate WHO social media digital platforms • Curate and implement a regular WHO social media digital content calendar • Design and generate creative and original content to grow and increase WHO's presence on digital platforms • Produce engaging visual content, including high-quality pictures and short, interesting videos to promote WHO programs and health subjects • Design digital content such as banners, infographics and visual content on key health subjects • Conduct regular media monitoring • Track misinformation and rumors in digital platforms using different digital key insights platforms • Assist in drafting press releases, web stories and impact interest stories. • Assist in creating engaging presentations • Coordinate event logistics • Create and manage media lists and assist in coordinating media outreach efforts • Undertake web research and data collection on specific subject areas as needed • Act as liaison under WHO Communication Officer with key partners, including MOH to promote health • Manage and maintain WHO's website, ensuring the platform remains up-to-date • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and taking an active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day). • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country. • Provide annual and end-of-assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results, and opportunities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc. • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

• Improved the organization’s presence and interaction on social platforms • Promoted greater health information on digital platforms, through images and graphic content • Increased production and dissemination of content on WHO programs in Angola • Produced qualitative content for WHO visibility • Improved dissemination of quality information on social platforms on key health topics • Strengthened coordination with partners for the promotion of health topics, including with UN agencies

Other desired/mandatory required technical knowledge a. Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation and reporting skills; b. Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; c. Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development; d. Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; e. Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, among others), email and internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment; f. Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines g. Sound security awareness; h. Have affinity with or interest in communication, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development and the UN system. i. Ability to communicate with respect, tact, and diplomacy j. Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of online dissemination of information, via social media mechanisms and the web. k. Thorough understanding of the impact of communications on the reputation, image, and success of an organization, as well as the role the web and social media have in this regard.

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials.
