Org. Setting and Reporting The position is located in the Office of the Director-General/Executive Director (ODG/OED) of the United Nations Office at Vienna/United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNOV/UNODC). The incumbent will work under the overall guidance of the Chief, ODG/OED and the direct supervision of the Communications Officer (Speechwriting).

Responsibilities Within assigned authority, the Associate Public Information Officer (Speechwriting and Communication Team) will contribute to speechwriting and communication activities of the Director-General/Executive Director (DG/ED), and managing communications, both external and internal, between the DG/ED and a wide range of audiences, including media. The incumbent will work in close coordination with the other functional areas of ODG/OED. The incumbent will be responsible for the following specific duties: - Operate and further develop the social media presence of the DG/ED, including possible expansion onto new platforms, in line with corporate communications guidance and strategies. Contribute to the production of social media assets to be used by the DG/ED by undertaking research, identifying occasions and target audiences, preparing production plans, writing drafts, and obtaining clearances. Monitor, analyze and report on social media trends and impact. - Support the DG/ED in the recording of video messages and statements, assist in drafting and potentially translating texts, helping to identify and maintain quality standards, and facilitating clearance processes. - Research, analyze and present information gathered from diverse sources; seek input and information from substantive staff, review relevant material, project documents and reports with a view to drafting statements, talking points and other communication products for the DG/ED while ensuring policy coherence and accuracy. - Support the DG/ED in determining photo and video requirements and liaise with colleagues in relevant Sections to ensure their fulfilment. Maintain an archive of photo and video materials for the DG/ED. - In close liaison with the responsible colleagues and Sections, participate in the development of graphic, text and multimedia assets with a view to use by the DG/ED. - Provide assistance to the DG/ED with the planning, organization and implementation of campaigns, events and other initiatives, including press briefings and interviews; prepare briefing materials for the DG/ED to assist in these encounters. - Liaise with media, and work closely with advocacy, programme/project support counterparts in UNODC and the United Nations Information Service (UNIS) on public information and advocacy activities as required, including to maintain a database of relevant media contacts in Austria and internationally. Maintain the website presence and assets of the DG/ED. - Contribute to articles and opinion pieces drafted on behalf of the DG/ED for high-profile media in order to maximize the impact of UNODC/UNOV activities by identifying and developing newsworthy ideas/topics and identifying media for placement. - Monitor and analyze daily media for stories and opportunities related to UNOV/UNODC activities and mandates and the media profile of the DG/ED. - Ensure implementation of the UNODC publication policy. - Contribute to reporting as well as monitoring and evaluating results. - Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

    Education An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

A first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the Young Professionals Programme Examination/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).

Work Experience A minimum of two years of relevant progressively responsible professional experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area OR the successful completion of the Young Professionals Programme Examination/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P) is required.

Work experience with the preparation of written communication products for a senior high-ranking official is required.

Work experience in managing social media outreach and campaigns in a professional setting for a senior high-ranking official is required.

Work experience in monitoring and reporting on communications, and on social media trends and impact is desirable.

Work experience with the production of multimedia products for a senior high-ranking official is desirable.

Work experience within the United Nations system or similar international organizations in the above areas is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise and a competency-based interview.

Special Notice This position is funded from extra budgetary resources. Filling of this position is subject to funding availability and the initial appointment will be for a period of one year. Any extension of the appointment will be subject to the availability of funding.
