Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Background of the assignment The position is located in the Conference Support Section (CSS), Organized Crime and Illicit Trafficking Branch (OCB), Division for Treaty Affairs (DTA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The incumbent will work under supervision of the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer in charge of the portfolio on communications for the Global Programme to Support the Mechanism for the Review of the Implementation of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and the Protocols thereto (GLOW97) and under the overall guidance of the Chief of Section. The incumbent will coordinate the performance of their duties with relevant colleagues discharging similar functions at the section level as well as in collaboration with relevant counterparts in UNODC as necessary. 2. Purpose of the assignment The purpose of the assignment is to provide technical expertise on communications and social media management in support of the work of CSS, with a main focus on: 1) intergovernmental work, particularly in relation to the 12th Session of the Conference of the Parties to UNTOC (COP12); 2) the initiatives to celebrate the first International Day for the Prevention of and Fight against all Forms of Transnational Organized Crime (IDTOC); as well as 3) the activities related to the Mechanism for the Review of the Implementation of the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and the Protocols thereto (UNTOC Review Mechanism). The incumbent will be guided by the section’s communication plan as related to the areas of work noted above and will oversee its further developments as necessary as well as the development of a communication plan for COP12 and for the IDTOC. The main areas of work of the incumbent will include coordinating the production of communication outputs such as web stories, social media posts and related visual and graphic elements, multimedia products such as videos and animations, as well as website management for CSS and for the UNTOC Review Mechanism. The incumbent will further contribute technical expertise to the drafting of speaking notes as needed. 3. Specific tasks to be performed by the consultant Under the supervision of the assigned Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer and the overall guidance of the Chief of Section, the consultant will perform the following specific tasks: 1) Implementation and further development, as needed, of the CSS communication plan as related to the section’s intergovernmental work, with a specific focus on COP12, on the IDTOC, and to the activities implemented by GLOW97. 2) Development of written communications outputs, including web stories, social media posts and related visual and graphic elements, in coordination with substantive officers in GLOW97, and in collaboration with relevant counterparts in OCB and in the UNODC Advocacy Section, as necessary. 3) Management of the section’s X account, as related to the specified areas of work indicated above, in coordination with relevant colleagues discharging similar functions in CSS. 4) Coordination of the production of multimedia outputs on relevant CSS and GLOW97 activities. 5) Collection and processing of relevant information, data and supporting material, for the drafting of speaking notes for UNODC management, as necessary. 6) Maintenance of the relevant webpages of CSS and GLOW97, in coordination with relevant colleagues in CSS. 7) Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, or related area (including graphic design, information technology, media, public relations, social sciences, film, video, multimedia production). A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in advocacy and communications is required • Proven experience with social media management is required; • Proven knowledge of video and graphic software such as, but not limited to, Adobe Premier, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, is required; • Experience with website content management systems is required; • Knowledge of issues related to crime prevention and criminal justice, organized crime or closely related fields is desirable; • Experience working in an international environment and/or a global media outlet is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
