UNHCR has been supporting the emergency response to the Sudan crisis since it started in April 2023. Besides Sudanese, Egypt hosts refugees from Syria, Eritrea and Ethiopia, among others. UNHCR has scaled up its intervention to enhance Gender-based violence (GBV) prevention, risk mitigation and response, to be able to attend the increased number of incidents that were identified. The state of Egypt adopted important policy measures to support the empowerment of women and fight violence against women and girls. However, violence against women both inside and outside the home remains prevalent, while reporting rates on GBV against refugee women have not decreased. UNHCR implements GBV prevention and response activities both directly and through its partners. In addition, UNHCR and UNFPA co-chair the GBV Sub-Working Group (SWG) which coordinates the emergency response within the humanitarian setting in the country and plays a pivotal role in ensuring mainstreaming GBV in other sectors, while promoting engagement with national counterparts.

Under the direct supervision of the Protection Officer the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: - Support the GBV Unit with risk mitigation activities, both within UNHCR and the broader interagency coordination mechanism. - Provide support to the coordination of the GBV SWG, which UNHCR is co-chairing, with a particular accent on drafting minutes of the meetings, convene meetings and follow-up on the workplan implementation. - Deliver training and capacity building on GBV related areas to UNHCR and partners’ staff, as well as other stakeholders as appropriate. - Provide support to the localization of GBV response, overviewing relevant initiatives with refugee Women-Led Organizations. - Contribute to the organization of the 16 Days of Activism and other raising awareness activities. - Draft reports and provide support with analysis as required, contributing to the identification of needs, risks and trends to be addressed.

Cairo is a family, category A duty station, has good residential areas and offers multiple touristic sites and locations to visit and enjoy. Cairo also offers excellent and frequent air connections to a wide range of international destinations. When it comes to accommodation, food, furniture and clothing, there is variety of choice withs the costs depending on the preferences of the incumbent. International banks and a wide variety of private health facilities are available, even though some international staff members opt to seek specialized medical services abroad. Bilingual and international schools are many, but some colleagues have experienced overt discrimination on the basis of nationality when trying to register their children into certain schools. Some international staff have experienced difficulties importing or exporting private vehicles as the customs-clearance process is cumbersome. Also, some staff members have experienced significant delays in the customs clearance of their personal belongings, leading to high demurrage and storage charges. Heavy traffic, air & noise pollution, and long commuting hours are often mentioned as challenging aspects of living in Cairo.
