United Nations Election Assistance in Afghanistan The United Nations, through JEMB (Joint Electoral Management Bodies), UNOPS, UNDP and UNAMA as lead agencies, have provided support for the election processes in Afghanistan for almost twenty years. Over this period, a significant amount of knowledge products and materials, coordination efforts and systems to support electoral processes have been generated. Many systems have been refined to work in an insecure and challenging environment and many innovative processes have been developed to adapt and respond to the Afghan contexts. Substantial financial contributions from the International Community/donor partners, and the enormous investment in time and human resources was invested in supporting elections in Afghanistan. Efforts must be made to ensure that this work is correctly and consistently archived, documented, best practices and lessons captured and able to be presented as a body of work for reference and future electoral activities in Afghanistan.

The objective is to have an archive of the products of the work of UN electoral support in Afghanistan from 2004 to 2022 which can be used for future reference and research. These includes the substantial legal framework and context-specific operational guidelines that have been developed for the electoral processes.

Under the direct supervision of the Archiving Expert and Project Officer, the National UNV will undertake the following tasks:

• Assist in identification of old data from Hard copies from existing storage facilities • Identify and sort data, available hard copies from stored locations (containers/warehouse/Office) • Work with the archiving team for data sorting and classification • Work on data review, data categorisation and data filing.
• Digitalisation of data for final archive product. Scanning hard copies and saving into electronic archive. • Work on Electronic data; identify and sort electronic data available from various storages. • Categorize electronic data per outlined output and prioritize • Assist project officer for Electronic Data transfer from various sources to working storage on server. • Assist on data synchronization. • Assist with maintenance "working" storage folders by election year on the UNDP server for data transfer and storage. • Contribute to daily progress report • Assist with implementation strategy for future maintenance of the archive • Perform any other task as assigned by the Archiving Expert. • S/He will work closely with the relevant staff of the UNDP country office • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

The position is National UN Volunteers assignment and hence the UN Volunteer will manage his/ her own living accommodation which he/ she can cover from her/ his monthly VLA.
