Overview

Provide proofread Arabic documents in line with UN guidelines.

You have:

  • Perfect command of Arabic as the candidate’s main language.
  • Excellent knowledge of English and knowledge of another official UN language.
  • Experience of proofreading Arabic documents in a broad range of subjects produced by the Economic Commission for Africa.

Expected duration 5 Dec 2022 - 04 May 2023

Duties and Responsibilities The individual contractor is required to work as a Arabic proofreader to help PS cope with the preparation of documents for the upcoming statutory meetings

  • Copy-editing, prior to printing of manuscripts of documentation to verify grammar, syntax, etc.;
  • Reading translations against original manuscript to ensure that the printed version is a true transcription of documents forwarded to TPU for finalization;
  • Checking that the manuscript revisers’ corrections have been correctly inserted into the translator’s draft by the DPAs;
  • Verifying the translation, grammar syntax, accuracy, style, punctuation and spelling to ensure conformity with the UN standard guidelines;
  • Ensuring the correctness of ECA final translations, including numbers, country names, referenced titles, proper names, tables and alphabetical order of lists;
  • Checking that all elements of the original (source) language are reflected in the final translated document (cover page, table of contents, correlation of table of contents with listed items, pagination, successive chapters, paragraphs, titles, figures, annexes, appendices and so on);
  • Ensuring for concise, logical organization of official documentation, with an eye to clarity, and typographical accuracy, simplicity of language in the case of un-revised translations;
  • Checking the material is thoroughly referenced to ensure that all footnotes are properly correlated, making correction on proofs;
  • Consulting translations/revisers/editors/DTP to clear obscure sentences/paragraphs;
  • Reading amended proofs against previous proofs and incorporating additional alterations as required;
  • Collaborating with the Desk Top Publishing (DTP) and conferring with the Document Control, Referencing and Contractual Services Unit to ensure the processing of documentation in a timely manner;
  • Perform other related duties when assigned by the supervisor.

    Languages English, French and Arabic are the working languages of ECA. For the post advertised, a perfect command of Arabic, which must be the candidate’s main language, and an excellent knowledge of English and knowledge of another official language of the United Nations are required.
