Job description

The Power-to-X Hub (PtX Hub) is a centre of excellence for Power-to-X located in Berlin, Bonn and Brussels and implemented on behalf of the German Federal Ministries for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). We are working in the innovative field of converting renewable energy into synthetic fuels and other chemicals that will eventually allow the use of green energy for maritime transport and aviation as well as the chemical, fertiliser, steel and cement industry. We develop criteria for a sustainable ramp up of a hydrogen economy, build international networks, conduct trainings, advise developing and emerging partner countries and prepare studies and reports about PtX. The PtX Hub functions as a central knowledge base for this nascent energy vector.

Given the stringent climate goals and inability to directly electrify certain industrial or transport applications, we can expect a massive and rapid market ramp-up of PtX and H2. There is thus a need to ensure that the financial systems and tools are conducive to support this enormous challenge, while complying with rigorous sustainability criteria at the same time. Large private investors, development finance institutions and multilateral development banks lack the expertise of the specificities of PtX and renewable hydrogen and thus require partners with proven expertise in these fields.

Your tasks

  • Support financing institutions (Development finance institutions, Multilateral development banks, National finance institutions in partner countries) as well as related industry (technology provider, project planner, off-taker) to gain an understanding of the characteristics of the PtX investment case
  • Provide knowledge on financing of PtX projects by giving an overview and a categorization of possible financing schemes, instruments, and institutions as well as sharing experiences from already financed / implemented PtX projects internationally
  • Advise decision makers in partner countries, Germany and Europe, on the best suited financing instruments to create an attractive investment environment ensuring benefits to the local population
  • Monitor the financial regulatory framework of the EU (such as the EU taxonomy), general financial instruments (such as blending and de-risking) as well as EU and German investment programmes
  • Represent the PtX Hub in global fora and initiatives of the EU of relevance to access to finance to fuel the market ramp-up of PtX and renewable hydrogen
  • Build a robust network with investors, banking sector and public officials dedicated to the development of financial systems
  • Support the conceptualization, preparation, implementation, and evaluation of information, dialogue and trainings events

Your profile

  • University degree in Economics, public finance, banking or equivalent
  • Several years of relevant professional experience, preferably gained abroad, in working in development agencies, advisory services, multilateral development banks, public or private investors, or in finance-related units of public administration
  • Proven knowledge and experience in the topic of renewable energy, knowledge of PtX and renewable hydrogen is an asset
  • Knowledge in project finance, sustainable finance and/or finance of renewable energy or large infrastructure projects in developing countries and emerging economies Intercultural sensitivity, strong communication and cooperation competencies and written/verbal/presentation skills
  • Proven communication and networking capabilities in the European context and globally
  • Capacity to present complex topics and processes accurately and concisely to a layman audience
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team
  • Business fluent in English and another official UN language; German language skills are an asset
