You have:

  • Master's degree or equivalent in disaster risk management, political science, administration, management, economics or related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree with two additional years of experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
  • Minimum of two years of working experience in project or programme management and disaster risk reduction related fields required.
  • Experience in drafting reports is desirable.
  • Experience advocating with governments and stakeholders on critical issues is desirable.
  • Knowledge and understanding of disaster loss data and statistics is desirable.
  • Experience working in the European and Central Asia region is desirable.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of Russian is desirable.

Result of Service

The service of the consultant contributes to the ROECA office workplan by coordinating efforts to reduce disasters, ensuring synergies among disaster reduction activities, and guiding the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

Duties and Responsibilities

Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG/ASG), UNDRR has over 140 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses, and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. It supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. This position is home-based, but the consultant would work for the UNDRR Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia in Brussels, Belgium. The Programme Management Support for implementation of risk knowledge DRR related activities reports to the Risk Knowledge Programme Management Officer with overall supervision by the Chief and Deputy Chief of the Regional Office.

Qualifications/special skills

A master's degree or equivalent degree in disaster risk management, political science, administration, management, economics or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A minimum of two years of working experience in project or programme management, disaster risk reduction related fields, such as disaster loss data is required. Experience in drafting reports is desirable. Experience advocating with governments and other stakeholders on critical issues is desirable. Knowledge and understanding of disaster loss data and statistics is desirable. Experience working in the European and Central Asia region is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Russian is desirable.
