Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The United Nations Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) is a partnership between the United Nations, Member States, and the civil society, which supports women led and women’s rights organizations working to build peace and provide humanitarian response throughout the world. Since the end of 2016, the WPHF has supported over 500 civil society organizations and is present in 26 countries or group of countries.

UN Women hosts the Secretariat of the WPHF. The WPHF Secretariat provides support to the Funding Board, mobilizes resources from governments, companies, foundations, and individuals, provides day to day support to UN Women Country Offices implementing WPHF programmes and ensures timely and quality monitoring and reporting. The Secretariat’s mandate is also to strengthen stakeholders’ knowledge of and engagement with women, peace and security and humanitarian action (WPS-HA) issues through proper communications, advocacy, and outreach. Finally, the Secretariat has been mandated to serve as a global knowledge center for local CSOs working on the front lines of conflict and crises and to establish a Community of Practice (CoP) for WPHF partners and grantees. The Secretariat manages the CoP and has established a Global Learning Hub (L-HUB) to mobilize dedicated financing to reinforce the impact, quality and reach of its global capacity building and knowledge exchange efforts between organizations and countries.

Under the guidance of WPHF Communications, Advocacy & Knowledge Management Specialist, the intern will be responsible for providing project and research support to WPHF L-HUB in benefit of WPHF CSO partners.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of WPHF Global Learning Hub and Community of Practice (CoP) activities, including the development of capacity building webinars and peer exchange sessions on organizational development and programmatic issues;
  • Support the coordination of WPHF L-HUB Mentorship Scheme and the mobilization of Germany’s Action Network on Forced Displacement members to provide training and peer learning opportunities to WPHF CSO partners working with displaced women in crisis settings;
  • Collaborate in the development of capacity building resources, peer exchange briefs and other knowledge products and communication materials related to the L-HUB initiatives;
  • Identify resources on WPSHA issues and learning opportunities for CSOs and support the dissemination of the resources through WPHF CoP channels (Facebook group, email updates, etc.).
  • Conduct research, data collection and analysis on WPHF capacity development initiatives.
  • Carry out other tasks assigned to support the WPHF secretariat, as required.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: international relations, international development, gender studies, social and political science, human rights, or other relevant subjects is required.
  • Meet one of the following:
  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  3. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation; or
  4. Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Remuneration:

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
